Above: Emily and Shabang with some of their 2005 winnings!

WELCOME to the Longacres Riding Camp!

December 13th:

We were happy to hear from Erica (Ridgewood, NJ), a new student interested in joining us at Longacres this summer. Call us with any more questions, Erica, and we hope to see you at Longacres next summer!

December 11th:

A big Longacres "welcome back" to Cara who has just signed up for her second summer at Longacres. Above is our favorite picture of Cara from last summer. We also feature a picture of returning student, Emily, as one of our rotating pictures of the month.

December 4th:

For a couple of weeks, last years rates and schedule have apparently been posted on the website by accident. All sessions are being offered this year. We have fixed most of the mistakes on the rate and schedule page, and will check when we get home this weekend for any other errors. Hope it is correct now! ALSO, watch for new pictures of the month coming next week.

We've had a few more adventures with pictures on the "Meet the Horses" page turning invisible over the past two days, but MAYBE they are all working now???  Check out the page with even more pictures of some of your favorites as well as Brianna's descriptions.  We're looking forward to posting some more rider horse descriptions.  How about Michelle on Joey, Emily on Horatio, Cara writing about Joker, Laura on Brownie, etc.  New students are welcome to write in their own comments or their hopes for riding a possible favorite at Longacres.

November 28:

Today's project was rewriting the "Barn and Facilities page".  Click here to visit that newly updated page. Click here to visit the newly updated "Meet the Horses Page". November 25: Hi guys, It's Meghan.  Today's project was putting together a neww photo album of some of my favorite pics from this past summer.  Click here to visit the newest 2005 picture album!

November 23:

Again, some more major updates were made to the "Meet the Horses" page. Meghan stayed up until 3 AM working on this – she really has the "bit between her teeth" about making a good, up to date horses page on the website. She thanks Shelley for contributing some of the new horse descriptions (and for a few belly laughs along the way!).   ALAS: Back to the drawing board again. Our new word processing program is still renaming files when we try to upload them to the website sometimes. You will be able to see all the new pictures if you click on the error messages. We'll figure it all out eventually. L

November 22:

Some more changes made today to the "Meet the Horses" page.

November 21 – Finally!

We have been VERY bad about not updating our "Meet the Horses" page for a long time. It has shown some horses no longer with us and has not shown our newest horses, like Joker, Zani, Horatio, and Ginger. We put in some work last night and today and have posted an updated page. Some of the links on the website still point to the old page and we will be changing them. But in the meantime, you can click here to visit the updated "Meet the Horses" page. We would like some of you to write in and send us your descriptions of the new horses (or some of the horses with older descriptions). We will post your horse descriptions along with the pictures on the updated page.

November 13:

New Year's Reunion? We did not host a Longacres new Year's reunion last year, though it is a tradition for us. Let us know if any of you are interested in visiting Longacres to see the barn and trails in the winter and make a few visits to some of the horses at their winter homes. If we do this event, you would arrive at Longacres the morning of December 31, stay overnight on New Year's eve, and leave for home on New Year's afternoon. We would hike around the farm in the snow (if it's snowing by then!) and make some drives to visit horses. Meghan and Tom will be traveling through the southeastern states to Florida during the next few weeks. If anyone is interested in meeting us to hear more about Longacres as we travel through those states, let us know. We had a good time visiting with Abby and would be glad to stop and see YOU. We will be back at Longacres in western New York during the first week in December. We'll be busy finalizing arrangements for the 2006 season at that time. We do get our email and phone messages while we travel.

November 10th Hi Everyone –

Our regrets go out to all of you who may have been having trouble with the links to other parts of the website from this page recently. We are traveling and recently picked up a new word processing program for our laptop so we could update the website from the road. It works in many ways, but has a mind of its own when it saves the pages for uploading to the web and has messed up the links. It thinks the pages are on our computer and not on the website. We should have this fixed soon. In the meantime, go to the opening Longacres page if you want good links to other parts of the website – click here.

November 9th:

Meghan and Tom had a great visit with Abby N. and her mom last night to answer some of their questions about the 2006 Longacres season. Abby would love to bring one of her horses to Longacres with her next summer and would love to join us for the full season. We don't usually have a chance to visit new Longacres prospects in their homes since our customers come from all corners of the country, but we very much enjoy the chance to get to know new families when an opportunity like this comes along. Meghan and Tom are on a working vacation and happened to be traveling quite near where Abby lives, so we phoned and offered to stop by.   Back to that wish of Abby's to bring her horse with her to Longacres. There's just one small problem; Abby lives in Breckenridge, Colorado!!! That would be something like 35 hours of driving a horse van (each way!). Abby's mom, Debbie, has a very realistic image of what that horse vanning drive ("Road trip" as Abby called it last night) might be like. She did drive Abby and her horse to Michigan for an event not too long ago. Lo-o-o-o-o-ng drive, and still very much in Abby's mom's memory! So the odds are that Abby will not be bringing her new horse (bought just three days ago) to Longacres and she will be staying home for part of the summer to train her horse and show on the Colorado summer show circuit. But it looks very likely that she will be joining us for one of our sessions to show with us and ride & train Longacres horses. Some of you may be hearing from Abby via e-mail during the coming months as she learns more about Longacres. Meghan especially liked Abby and looks forward to hearing more from her. Meghan says that Abby reminds her a lot of California girl,Danielle, from last summer and that's a good thing. Abby told Meghan, "I stay pretty calm at horse shows and try to keep my friends calm. My nickname at shows is "the Human Sedative". (Don't you wish Abby had been your friend at Longacres sometimes in past shows, Brianna!!!???) If you hear from Abby, now you know "the rest of the story"!   PS - Lillian; if you're checking the website and reading this, Abby told Meghan that one of the most memorable performances in the 2004 Yearbook Video was your "Ready Whip" episode at the cabin party!

November 3rd:

Hello Everyone, Meghan and Tom are on a long RV vacation in the west. We just went to our first movie in quite a while and saw "Dreamer". We give it two "thumbs up"! Almost as good as "Sea Biscuit", our favorite horse movie of recent times.   We'd like to welcome Niki to our second session at Longacres. She plans to bring her own horse to take to the big Longacres show and to Erie County Fair. Niki and Shelley, both having their own horses at Longacres during second session, are a good nucleus of a 2006 Longacres show team at the fair.   We also heard from Issy, a new student for 2006 planning to sign up soon. We have a good number of students already, well before the pre-Christmas period when we usually start to get a volume of new enrollments.   Meghan also wants to report that she recently bought two new school saddles. Although many of our Longacres students have their own saddles, we welcome riders who do not and are looking to enroll several new beginners in the 2006 sessions, so we want to have good school equipment on hand!   We'll try to update the website again soon. It is a little hard to get to good internet connections when we are traveling. - Tom & Meghan

October 14:

Longacres is very lovely at this time of year. In a few days we will be at peak foliage season. It is also a season where we are rushing to finish draining our outdoor water pipes and winterize the plumbing in the showers and dining hall. Busy, busy, busy!!! More new inquiries coming in about next season from new families every week!

October 6th:

Welcome back Emily P., 2006 student # 5! Emily is coming for a full month this year, and with Emily's enrollment, fully 75% of returning 2005 students have doubled the length of their stay for 2006. We must be doing something right. Meghan says the question of the hour is, "Is Checkers coming too?"

October 4th:

More new enrollments in the mail today! The big news is that Shelly, aka "da Child", returns next year for the full season! Welcome back, Shelly, though you have certainly outgrown the "child" label from when you were the youngest Longacres student a couple years ago. Shelly will be helping as a CIT part of the time this summer and we'll be counting on her as a full season student to be our touch-stone of continuity as we move from one session to another dureing the season. Great to have you again, Shelly (and Jenna!).

Shelly will be 2006 student #3 and Laura F. will be student #4 on the roster. Laura returns for her second year. Laura did a LOT of riding at other horse resorts after she was at Longacres last season, and we can't wait to see how much she has improved her riding.

October 3rd:

Hello again, after three weeks! Meghan and Tom flew home from Seattle on an overnight "red-eye" flight on Thursday night, spent Friday getting ready for the weekend, and then ran two of our sports management events back to back on Saturday and Sunday. Yes, we are tired! Meghan already had a bit of a cold, so she is really catching up on sleep today!!!

We put out a bit of a false alarm worrying that we might fill up our enrollment on October 1st. Many of you who have said you planned on signing up soon have called in to say you need a little more time to make your final 2006 plans and pick your sessions. But we are proud to announce our first official 2006 students.

Madeleine R. will be a first time Longacres student when she attends our first session next summer. Madeleine will be Longacres 2006 Student #1 in honor of her being the very first to sign up for next summer's session. She is also a friend of Shelly's from Maryland. Any friend of Shelly's is welcome at Longacres.

Michelle K. ("that trophy is MINE!") returns for her second season at Longacres and is officially #2 on our roster. We hope to make more welcome announcements in the coming weeks!

We should have lots more Longacres news to post in the coming days. The woman who has Patti at her farm for the winter loves her and says Patti is Queen of the pasture. Tovah has written twice to talk of how well Quantum is doing at Lake Erie College. We'll publish more news soon. Fall is arriving at Longacres with the leaves turning bright yellow and orange!!!

Some General Comments on 2006 sessions:

We have a nice mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders between June 25 and July 23rd. We encourage our younger and less experienced riders to choose those sessions. (Advanced show riders welcome, also!)

From July 26 to August 19th, beginners are very welcome, and if a beginner comes then, they will get lots of special attention. But the second half of the summer is planned more around preparing for the big shows like the Longacres Jumper Derby in early August and the "A" rated Erie County Fair during our final week. Both shows have classes for all levels of rider. During second session we try to pair each rider up with a horse they like especially and plan to show at the fair or the big Longacres show (or both). This second session program is especially attractive to our more experienced riders who like to work frequently with the same horse and test their progress in important horse shows. We hope this general description helps you in making a choice on when to attend Longacres in 2006.

- Tom & Meghan

September 2nd:

2006 Schedule is now posted. No change in tuition. Some showing and field trip costs may rise if fuel costs continue to soar.

Greetings to all of you, especially you "lucky ones" who have already started back to school! Longacres sends a special welcome to Madeleine from Maryland who is a friend of Shelley's and planning to join us in 2006. Also to Austin and one of her friends from Miami, FL. Austin went to another riding camp for several years, but wants more riding, so she's planning on Longacres for next July. She found out about Longacres because our friend, Kelly Waples, was her counselor at that camp two summers ago. She asked if Kelly can come give her a guest lesson, and we will try to make that happen, Austin.

Many Planning to Enroll for 2006!

We have an unprecedented number of very early calls asking about signing up for Longacres in 2006. We will accept registrations for space after October 1st. The four weeks in July (including two week options) will fill very early this year, if these calls are any indication. We have a firm limit of nine students, so don't delay too long if you want to come in the July session. (It might be two thirds filled on October 2nd!) The three and a half weeks in August usually doesn't fill until later in the winter, so you likely have more time if you are thinking August. Schedule for 2006 is now posted. We will be open for our traditional full 8 weeks next summer.

August 31st:

Meghan just came up from the barn with tears in her eyes from saying "good bye" to Shabang. She has really bonded with this fine horse in the weeks since the camp season ended. Meghan has been feeding and playing with her "Banger" every morning and every night. He is such a kind, gentle horse to handle. It is surprising since he is so full of energy when he gets to jumping 3'9" courses! Shabang has gone to spend the winter with a family that has a gelding of their own who needs a companion in his pasture and barn. It will be a relaxed winter for Shabang with only a few trail rides for work.

While Meghan was at the barn with Shabang last night, Crystal and her mom came over to pick up a forgotten sleeping bag. Crystal brought carrots and apples for Shabang which he loved! She also reported that she won ribbons showing Llamas at both Erie County Fair and NYS Fair! Good job, Crystal.

August 30th:

Hi everyone,

In a way, the 2006 Longacres season gets under way in just over a month. We'll be accepting deposits and reservations for next summer beginning on October 1st. We know of at least two of you who are counting the days. It will be interesting to see who becomes the official "Longacres 2006 student #1" for sending in the first reservation after October 1st. No fair mailing before September 30th!

We have just one horse remaining at Longacres now. Shabang still has no winter home. Surprising since he is such a good jumper and has such a great barn personality. Meghan and I have really enjoyed having him here as a pet since camp ended, so it has been no chore, but soon we must find a spot for him for the winter. If you know anyone who wants a lovable 16+ hand bay thoroughbred who jumps like the wind, have them call us.

We got a nice email from Michelle today about the high score award trophy she got in the mail. Several of you won high score awards from the Summer Show Series even though you weren't here to accept them. Michelle, Shelley, Emma, and Brianna all won various high score awards.

August 26th:

Well, Patti is gone to her winter home and now that there is no mare to compete over, Shabang and Joker have become friends in the pasture. Joker has a home with a former Longacres camper from MANY years ago! He will be a western trail horse all winter. Marge actually took Longacres horses for the winter months many years ago when I was a very young manager at Longacres!

FINALLY we are finishing adding up the canteen accounts and show expenses and will be sending you bills or refunds on your spending money deposits this weekend. We are putting all the digital pictures we took this summer on a CD, and you can order one for $22 including postage if you want. There are a couple of hundred pictures. You can download low resolution copies right off our website of many pictures for free, but if you want the original hi resolution big files suitable for printing 8 by 10's, you can order the CD. You can email us if you want the CD, or when you get your spending money statement just add the $22 to your check if you owe us.

We will be doing a "Yearbook Video" showing all of you and your friends later in the fall and it should be done in time for you to get it for the Christmas Holidays if you like.

August 24:

Here's a quick word picture so you at home can share some of what's happening at Longacres. We've been keeping Joker separated from the other geldings for a while, since he is very competitive for the attention of the mares. Most of the horses have now gone to their winter homes and only Shabang, Patti, and Joker are left. So yesterday we turned Joker out to pasture with Shabang and Patti, who are VERY close friends!

Joker moved right in to try to chase Shabang away and claim Patti for his own girl friend. Usually Shabang is very docile and gives way to other more aggressive horses, but he has bonded so tightly with Patti that he would have none of this intruder and stood his ground. There was a lot of arching of necks, wheeling around and kicking, and then Joker would charge at Shabang trying to get between him and Patti. Shabang looked gorgeous when he arched his neck, pranced, and spun around to block Joker's kicks. Patti joined in kicking off at Joker to show that she preferred Shabang!

Finally, on one of Joker's charges, Shabang met him head on baring his teeth and rearing in Joker's face. Joker finally backed off the direct confrontation, but then he turned to "showing off" and displaying his strength and power. First he galloped twice around the pasture, then reared straight up on his hind legs as high as any horse could, then put on a display of bucking that would do any saddle bronc at a rodeo proud. Meghan and I could not believe how high in the air Joker could get with all four feet high off the ground and his back arched, then he would twist sideways while six or eight feet in the air, come down and do it again! It was very impressive! They have settled into a wary truce today, with Patti and Shabang grazing about 30 yards from Joker as they all keep an eye on each other. We wish we had gotten it all on video yesterday!

Ps - hi Ashley

August 21st:

Guess who's here at Longacres tonight? TOVAH stopped by on her way back to college! We all went to the final night of the fair together and it seemed just as though Tovah had been here all summer. After all, she was here for five weeks in May and June helping get camp opened up for the 2005 season, and now she is the very last one here before everyone goes back to school. Meghan and Tovah did horse care together tonight after we got back from the fair. Just like old times.

August 19th:

In a normal year, today would be one of the final two days of the season. As you all know, this was an unusual year at Longacres and we closed earlier than normal. We thank Leigh Fisher and High Time stables for "loaning us a student" to be an honorary Longacres camper for the Erie County Fair week, just so Meghan and I would not have withdrawal symptoms that were too harsh! Below is a picture of Christa Botticello taken at the Fair two days ago with Patti and their ribbons. AND in a normal year, today would have been "big jumping day" just before you all go home. So Christa came over to Longacres today and jumped Quantum 3'9", her personal best. It made us feel almost like it was a normal year at Longacres.

August 18th:

Christa won a 4th, 6th, and 3rd in jumpers riding Patti at the fair to uphold Longacres honor in this special year when our season ended early. Thanks, Christa, for your participation! Leigh Fisher rode Quantum, and he was great but had one rail down in each class and did not win a ribbon all week. A first for Quantum!

On the last night of the fair tonight, Uncle Billy, Meghan, Barbie Glica, Leigh Fisher and Dan, and Christa and Pam Botticello and Tom all got together at the fair after the show to "solve all the problems in the horse world". A good tention releasing party!

We miss all of you Longacres riders who would normally be sharing this with us. In most years Longacres would have two more days to go until the end of our session. We look forward to next year when we expect to have a good group of Longacres riders at the fair!

August 15th Update:

Hi all,

We're ready for Erie County Fair, but it doesn't seem the same without YOU! We sent Quantum and Patti over to represent Longacres. Leigh Fisher will be riding Quantum in schooling jumpers and Krista Botticello will be riding Patti in low jumpers. Many of you know Krista from last year when she rode Star in a couple of events at the fair. This will be Krista's first time in jumpers at the fair! Picture below is of Krista and Patti taken about two hours ago.

August 11th:

Quantum was AWESOME!

The Longacres championship horse show and Jumper Derby were held last night. Quantum was shown in the high Derby by Leigh Fisher from High Time stables, one of my good friends. He was one of only three horses to go clean in the first round, and was blistering fast in the jump-off over 3'9" fences. He barely touched a rail in the jump-off which unfortunately rolled off the cup - if only that rail had stayed up he would likely have won. Leigh thinks so and she was riding the horse that did win! We don't have any still photo's, but will post a still from the video soon.

  • Tom
  • PS - Some of you will have trophies coming in the mail soon!

August 4th update:

Hello again all,

This has been an unusual season in many ways, from the record setting (and rare, thankfully) very hot weather, to the cancellation of our final session. One more little bit of trivia from 2005: As many of you know, we ran a horse show on Memorial Day weekend in May before any of you were here. Tovah and Alex very generously volunteered their time painting and cleaning jumps and getting everything ready for the May show. It was great to have all our jumps painted beautifully well before you all arrived for the regular season! But that was now almost two and a half month's ago. We are running our big annual Jumper Derby next Wednesday and the jumps were beginning to look a little used. So for the next three days we are painting them all over again so everything will look first rate for the show. It is the first time in my memory that we have painted our jumps TWICE in the same season. End of trivia!

August 3rd later:

We're getting lots of early interest in Longacres 2006 season already. In addition to Mickey and Rachel from Houston earlier this week, we just sent out an information packet to Abby from Breckenridge, Colorado. If we get some of the "California Girls Club" back next summer, we will have a very geographically varied group of riders in 2006! We will be accepting 2006 enrollments beginning on October 1st. Don't wait too long to register - we will be running our full eight week season again in 2006 and it looks like we will be full again as we usually are except for this special year when so many old friends "graduated".

August 3rd update:

Meghan and I thought that some of you at home might enjoy seeing our "special" trick for bringing the horses in from pasture when it is just the two of us doing horsecare! Instead of leading them into the barn one after another, we just open the gate and the stall doors and "in they come". We could not get away with this with small campers standing by or with our full herd of horses, but with five of them only, it works fine. Sometimes Patti and Shabang end up in the same stall, but they don't seem to mind.

We are still working with horses getting ready for the jumper Derby and Erie County Fair. Uncle Billy has wanted to ride Patti for a long time and he did yesterday. He did well jumping and we got a great picture. We'll publish it soon. Kelly Waples has been schooling Quantum (and Patti some). Check the picture of her below jumping Quantum 4'3"!!!

July 31:

Here's a special little "Longacres Hello" to Mickey Hall and her friend, Rachel, from Houston, Texas. These girls are hunter AND jumper riders about 14and they are looking at Longacres for 2006. They sound as though they have similar experience to Linnea and Danielle who came to Longacres from California this summer. Mickey asked how soon Longacres starts signups for next year. We'll be taking our first applications on October 1st.

July 27th Update:

Lillian will leave for the airport this afternoon and we are getting a long needed soaking rain this morning. So it is beginning to really feel like the Longacres 2005 season is coming to an end. (If you are in the area, try to attend our Longacres reunion at the Jumper Derby on Wednesday evening, August 10th - many old Longacres alumni planning to come!)

Meghan and I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Lillian Jacobs for her very outstanding work heading our riding program and counseling our students this summer. Lillian was an enthusiastic and popular student at Longacres for three years before returning as an instructor and counselor this year. We knew she would be a cooperative and pleasant person to work with. But we were not fully prepared for the excellence with which she performed all aspects of her job. Cheerful, fun loving, generous, responsible, reliable, a tireless worker sometimes far into the night before a horse show - - you name it, and Lillian performed above and beyond any expectation we had before the season began. Lillian will have many options open to her in future summers and it is too early for her to know what she is doing next summer. But it is not too early for Meghan and Tom to say that "Longacres would be proud to have Lillian on our staff again next year or any other year."

Lillian joins girls like Tovah and Mandy on our list of the best counselors we've had over the years.

PS: Meghan, especially, will also be missing a great friend to "vent" with as they worked together behind the scenes!

July 25th:

Got some rest today - we hope you did too! We're playing musical horse homes. Ho-Ho is already back since he did not get along with the mare where he was supposed to spend the winter. He should have a new home soon. We are still considering buying "Hot Shot Bob". Lillian rode him today and he was great. Shabang still needs a home, but we have a lead on someone at Providence Farm who might want him. We're also still looking for a good home for Ebony. Brownie is still here waiting to go to Alex for the winter at her college, and Quantum is waiting for the Jumper Derby on August 10th.

Pictures are posted! Click HERE to see Brianna jumping four feet and many more!

July 24th, 3PM:

Goodbye everyone!

Longacres 2005 season, our 65th in a row, has come to a close. (Well, not quite - we're still running another horse show on August 10th)

But all campers have gone home except for Bri who is staying an extra day to relax and go home RESTED this year! And keep Lillian company tonight. Lillian will be here until Wednesday morning so all of you at home can email her one more time during the next two days so she will not be too lonesome here at Longacres. She will be busy organizing the barn for next year and caring for the last few horses waiting to go to their winter homes.

Meghan, Bri, Lillian and myself will be having a final Friday's dinner together tonight before we take Bri to the airport in the morning.

Thanks from all of us at Longacres to those of you checking in on the website from home. We're so pleased to have had the chance to know you this summer and to show with you, work with the horses with you and see all your progress and the new things you've had a chance to try at Longacres. Special thanks to our veteran campers, Bri and Shelley, to Shelley's mom, Debbie, and to Lillian and Emma for passing on Longacres traditions to all our new for 2005 students. And we have already heard that many of you new 2005 students are planning on returning to Longacres next season. Registration will open in October and we fully expect to be offering the full eight week season again next year after running only a half season in 2005.

More news coming soon.

Pictures to be posted SOON!

July 23rd 9 PM:

What a final day! We started riding at 10am and except for a very short lunch and Kone King break and a quick dinner, we rode all day long until a few minutes ago. This morning we did a fancy choreographed jumping routine with everyone jumping on the outside course for the yearbook video. Then we did "Big Jumping" day. Brianna jumped Quantum 4' and several others came close! Then it was out to the trails to jump the "stairway to heaven" and the jumps on the outside old hunt course which Tom cleaned up just for the occasion.

Down to a quick lunch and off the Kone King to cool off. Then it was back in the saddle for more video's taken out in the woods on the trails and finally time for "pond swimming with the horses" before dinner. Everyone got wet. Michelle and Crystal got VERY WET!!!!!!!! And Tom!

We were an hour late for dinner by this time, but everyone was in high spirits and no one cared. After dinner Tom, Lillian, and Brianna set up the grid for "grid jumping" . Everyone jumped the grid with NOT ONE RUN OUT!!! Which I think is a first for Longacres grid jumping. Even our three beginners jumped the entire grid. Michelle, Maria, and Crystal had never jumped before they came to Longacres two weeks ago. I am SOOOOOO very proud of their progress. I don't think anyone will ever believe that we taught three beginners to jump well enough to jump eight three stride combination jumps in a row in just two weeks of lessons!!!

More news and lots of pictures to come soon.

July 22:

Just one more day. It's hard to believe that the Longacres season for 2005 is almost over! We plan an exciting day tomorrow with some bigger jumps, swimming the horses in the pond, and lots of video for a video yearbook.

Tonight's special event was a moonlight trail ride on the field under a full moon just for our ten year olds. Lillian led the trail with Michelle and Crystal. Tom took his telescope down to the barn so Michelle and Crystal could get off their horses for a moment and look at the craters on the moon. It was fun doing something special just for our youngest students.

Thanks to Danielle and Linnea for the very nice email they sent to all our campers after they went home to California. We miss you!

July 20th, late:

We had a successful show at Longacres today! A good turnout of horses from other stables and excellent performances from our own riders. Check out the picture below of Michelle "two blue ribbons and a trophy winner"; all afternoon she kept saying, "It's mine!" That's the official photo caption of the day.

The big ribbon winner of the day was Cara Murray! Cara rode two horses including her beloved "Joker" and you will see her name often in the list of winners at the end of this article.

We're perhaps most proud of Brianna Altieri who has joined the ranks of bold jumper riders for real. If you read yesterday's story you know that Brianna jumped Quantum in practice. Today she showed him and did well in the middle jumper division, Schooling Jumpers. So well, in fact, that Tom said, "Bri, would you like to try the highest class in Special Jumpers?"

Brianna took Quantum in the Specials and was great. She didn't win, but was solid and secure on the big jumping course. Some of Brianna's spontaneous "comments" as she took her first big jumps in a show on Quantum were quite entertaining for the crowd!

Below is an extensive list of the days winnings by Longacres riders.

Longacres Show Results 7/20:

Shelly - two 2nd's in Schooling Jumpers + Reserve Champion on Jenna

Brianna - 3rd in Low Hunter, 3rd & 4th in Schooling Jumpers on Quantum

July 19th, noon:

The big news of the day is 5th year student, Brianna Altieri, finally getting to ride Quantum. And not just getting to ride him, but doing a pretty darn good job of it! And not just doing a darn good job of it but jumping pretty darn big! See the "proof" below:

July 19:

Hi Linnea and Danielle,

We hope you had a good trip home and are getting some rest! Here's the "California Girls Club" picture. (Linnea, Danielle, Lillian from left to right)

July 18th:

We had good luck with the weather at Sunday's show at High Time Stables. There was a heavy thunderstorm, just as at Saturday's show, but on Sunday the storm hit just as we were packing up our final load of things to bring home. The weather during the show was great (if hot).

The show began very well for Longacres with Linnea winning the first jumper class on Patti and Brianna taking second on Ebony. Great job girls winning 1st and 2nd for the Longacres show team. Emma had a 3rd out of 12 in the higher Special Jumpers on Quantum and Maria won 1st out of six riders in one of her classes. Cara did well again on Joker and spirits were good. We all watched video of the shows at the house last night after a festive dinner in town. We are sadly saying "goodbye" to Linnea and Danielle (our California girls) this afternoon. They made a mark at Longacres after only a one week stay and we hope to see them again next year.

More to come later!

July 16th:

We had some good riding at today's horse show. More to come tomorrow at the second show of the weekend. The day began with Sarah showing our new young hunter mare, "Ginger" in the baby hunter division. Sarah did well with this young horse over fences and got a 4th in the under saddle class. Cara took another of our new horses, "Joker", and showed him in a number of flat classes. These were big competitive classes, and Cara made "Joker" look like he belonged at the show. Cara got two 2nd place ribbons in the classes for green horses.

Michelle, one of our 10 year old riders, did a fine job on Stoney, winning two 2nd place red ribbons! Michelle is looking forward to more difficult classes at the Longacres show next Wednesday.

The jumpers were about to begin on the outside course when the clouds parted and a near flood ingulfed the show ring! The jumper classes were moved to the indoor ring at Hasty Hills Farms on short notice. Our girls did well quickly learning new courses. Shelley got a 2nd and 3rd; Danielle two 2nd's and a 4th, and Emma got a 1st and a 4th &3rd (we think).

Just about everyone else will be showing tomorrow at High Time.

There were VERY high spirits at our traditional after show Pizza Hut dinner tonight!

July 14th late evening:

There comes a point in every new camp session (almost always!) when bonding between old and new students finally really takes place and often it comes quite suddenly. It happened this session just after dinner during our first rain shower in ten days. The girls were heading back to the barn from dinner when the rains came. Instead of heading for shelter, they frolicked in the rain together and then headed for the creek and apparently had a rousing good time getting soaking wet after enduring our recent heat wave all week!

I caught up with them when I drove up to the barn from a quick shopping trip. The girls were all still soaked from their creek walk in the rain but in boisterous good spirits. I had hoped to get in a good riding lesson after the rain stopped, but they were all in such good spirits and so enjoying playing together informally that I ok'd skipping the evening ride. I asked who had stayed dry the longest on the creek walk and they all laughed and said that it was young Michelle. The older girls had taken turns carrying Michelle across the deep spots in the creek at first, but by the time they got to the barn she looked just as soaked as everyone else.

Cara told me she had stayed "somewhat dry" but she looked soaking wet to me.

What I liked best was that all ages were in this together, with our sophisticated 15 to 17 year olds playing in the mud just like the ten year olds. That often happens at Longacres, and I was very happy to see the bonding taking place that way tonight.

July 14th:

I took some nice pictures of this week's students jumping today. There are pictures of almost everyone. Emma was busy teaching a lesson and Crystal was visiting her mom, but everyone else has a picture posted. Check out the one of Stoney and Cara and the one of Joker and Brianna, especially! Click here for pics.

We also had a small mounted games event in our lesson this morning to work on control and have some fun. The top two scores in a bit of a surprise were Brianna and Cara! Nice rides!

July 12:

Third day of our new session and our beginners are already doing their first jumps. They are liking the little jumps and clamoring to begin cantering - which should be tomorrow or Thursday. Michelle, Crystal, and Maria are all making great progress.

The weather is terrible for riding - good and sunny, but 90 degrees plus and humid. We are on our special hot weather schedule with a voluntary 6:15 Am riding lesson for those tough enough to climb out of bed when it is cool. Then another ride at 8:30am and two more in the evening when it is a little cooler again. Tomorrow we're going to do an afternoon trail ride to get back to five hours a day. Not the best riding weather, but we're finding ways to make it work hope for rain later in the week to cool things off.

July 10th:

Our second session is under way and all new students have arrived safely and ridden multiple horses. We'll post some pictures at this link soon - maybe later tonight. Cara is the first member of the "dusty bottoms club" for 2005 and has been designated president! She got right up and jumped another line on Joker after taking a gentle fall when he stopped at a jump.

We have some GOOD riders this session! Lillian, Emma, Brianna, and Shelley staying over from the first session all ride well, and our new "California Girls", Linnea and Danielle are both very good riders with their own horses at home. Sarah and Cara both did well on several horses today, and we have a promising beginner group with Maria, Crystal and Michelle. We're looking forward to success at the shows next weekend!

July 9th:

We say "goodbye" to some fine girls tomorrow, but a big "hello" to 6 new riders as we change sessions! We're excited to be beginning our biggest session of the summer. We're actually full to our limit this coming week and are opening up Esseress bunk to accommodate the big group.

Congrats to our riders who all did well in a very big open show at Longacres today. Emma rode Quantum to a 2nd in the highest jumper class and Emily won 3rd out of 12 horses in schooling jumpers riding Peppermint Patti. Brianna was Champion in Puddle Jumpers on Ebony. Kaylin and Penny both got ribbons in jumping classes in the inside ring after only jumping for two weeks at Longacres.

(Speaking of beginners, Emma and Shelly say "thank you" to Laura for sending the care package!)

You'll be hearing some new names this coming two weeks as we get to know six newcomers to Longacres! We're looking forward to it!

- Tom & Meghan

July 8th:

This is fun! - We began the 2005 Longacres season just ten days ago with some great girls - but girls who had less riding experience than many of our students the past couple of years. The first two days or so it showed, with many horses going in every direction but a straight line, riders cutting corners and coming into jumps at odd angles, and legs flopping around on the horse's sides. But after ten days of riding many hors a day, it is all coming together. Even our least experienced girls are jumping small courses now and paying good attention to going deep into their corners and coming straight to their jumps. Tonight I worked with Shelley and Emily on advanced jumper exercises with Shelley's own horse, Jenna, and Emily on Patti. They did collect, turn, gallop, collect, turn, gallop exercises in a folded figure eight around jumps, just as though they were going for time on a jump off course, but with no jumps. They did a nice job. It was the first time I really turned Emily "loose" on Patti. Emily likes to be "turned loose", but she has lots of respect for Patti's power and speed, so she has been glad to take it slow as she gets used to this great mare. Saturday we'll see how all the practice works out when she represents Longacres in schooling jumpers. We hope to have lots of positive show results to report Saturday night at the end of our first session.

Welcome second session riders!

We have a new group coming in Sunday for our next two weeks which will be bigger than our first session. We're full right up for next week and still have one spot for the final week. Brianna, Shelley, Lil, and Emma are staying over from this session to give us continuity through the end of the month.

July 7th:

The "Hippophiles" just barely edged out the "Brood Mares Gone Wild" team at tonight's Gymkhana of mounted games. Times for all events were tabulated my Meghan and the winning team of Brianna, Kaylin, and Shelley finished with just a few seconds lower time total. One of the biggest upsets was the win in the can race by our least experienced rider, Penny! Penny and Brownie had just the right combination of careful steering, a good hand with the crop to knock down the cans, and a good gallop to the finish line to take the fastest over-all time out of all the advanced riders, beating even the counselors! Great job, Penny!

July 6th:

A lovely evening rain! It's been getting hot and dry again at Longacres but we were worried about wishing for rain after the flood we had a few weeks ago when things were too dry. Last night we had just what we needed - a nice brief heavy rain shower to soften the ground for the horses and turn the grass a lush green for this Saturday's horse show! The girls were ready for rain as well, after the hot dry recent weather. Emily lead us off in the welcome rain celebration by dancing in the rain outside the barn door. Several (but not ALL) joined her.

We also had a nice jumping lesson in the outside field yesterday with everyone, including our two riders who had not jumped at all before last week joining us doing courses on the big show field. Emily is working with Peppermint Patti and planning to show in jumpers this weekend, and Emma did a great job with Quantum down his favorite "road line" for the first time this summer. All our riders are starting to look like they have a plan when they ride. It feels good for me, since we have many new riders this year and much less experienced riders than we've had the past couple of season's at Longacres. There's something about being able to ride good horses over good jumps for five hours a day that just makes you improve quickly!!!!!!!!!!!!

July 4th Update:

Good morning lesson with everyone jumping well; "canta-loping" added to the vocabulary! Camp fire with Meghan's smores tonight; went to the East Aurora town carnival and great fireworks show last night; ALMOST everyone danced their hearts out in front of the band at the carnival!! Good karma at Longacres this weekend! See "smores" picture below!

July 2nd Update:

Everyone rode well in the open horse show at Longacres this morning. Riders from other stables took a lot of ribbons, but so did our new Longacres riders. We'll post a detailed list of our winners later. Check the picture below of Emily and "Shabang" with just two of her blue ribbons. Emily won multiple championships on Shabang today (looks happy, doesn't she??).

Quantum the "Dud - NOT!" - Quantum has had bad luck this spring. He got kicked just after he returned from Ohio and was sore for over a week, Then he got a bad nail from the farrier and was off for another few days. We began to ride him gently a few days ago during the heat wave. When he was flabby and out of shape and it was over 90 degrees, he just plodded along like an old plow horse. I began calling him "Quantum the Dud". But not yesterday! It was windy and fresh out and Quantum was ready to get back to serious work. Shelley rode him for about a half hour at a trot doing basic dressage to get him in shape. She did a great job. Then it was time to canter on the big show field. Quantum picked up a canter and let loose with five straight Quantum Leaps in a row! Shelley stayed on, but it was exciting enough that she said, "Emma, it's your turn now."

Emma got on and had an adventurous time working him down so that he would behave and jump in a controlled manner. "Quantum Leap" is definitely back and looking like the powerful firebreathing show jumper that we know and love. Now the only question is who is brace enough to try him in the next show??

June 30:

We spent the formal lesson this morning taking some nice jumping pictures of everyone. They came out well, and you can click here to see them! The show has been moved from this evening to Saturday morning at 10AM to take advantage of the MUCH cooler weather coming in tomorrow.

June 28:

The heat wave continues for two more days. On Friday the temperature will mercifully drop back to a more seasonable mid 70's, ideal for horses and riding. We got up early and had a cool early lesson again today. Right after lunch we piled in the motor home (WITH the air conditioners running!!) and drove into the "Kone King" for ice cream. It was a welcome break with lots of excited chatter. This group of girls is hitting it off well together. We have a nearly equal blend of Longacres old-timers and new girls.

Last night around the dinner table we had an informal poll. Who likes to sleep the most? (tie: Lillian and Shelley!) Who has been to Longacres the most years? (Brianna, FOREVER, it seems!) Then came my question, "Who talks the most?"

Simultaneously, everyone turned and pointed to Emily, who with a big grin on her face made no attempt to deny the obvious!!!!!!

(Everyone else is doing well, too!)

Below: Drill Team June 27

June 27 Update:

Sorry! We only got in four hours of riding today instead of our usual five. But we had a decent excuse; we had a record high temperature for the date of 95 degrees which was also the hottest it has been here on any date in ten years! We had advance warning, so we got up very early and had our formal lesson at 8:30 AM before it got hot. Then we all went back to bed for a nap and had a long trail ride in the shade of the woods after lunch. The girls with the most energy had another light mid afternoon lesson and then we had another formal jumping lesson for everyone after dinner.

Everyone Jumped, and I mean EVERYONE! - Penny and Kaylin, our beginner students both jumped small verticals tonight, only their second day at Longacres. Both girls are teens who rode a little when they were little, but have not ridden for several years and are just getting back into riding. Both are doing very well, earning cheers from all the rest of us when they do something new for the first time (about once an hour).

Emma worked hard with our new gelding, Joker, tonight. He was worried about many of the special jumps on our field, but by the end of the night, Emma had him doing all the jumps. Lillian calmed down a skittish Justin during the evening ride and he was looking good at the end. Brianna rode our new mare, Zaney, doing full courses on this promising new horse. Brianna has improved her riding a lot since last year.

Tonight was Shelley's first ride on Quantum. "Q" has been sore the past few days from a small abscess in his foot, but did a few low jumps this evening and looked pretty good. He'll be back to his old self in a few more days. I was anticipating quite an exciting ride for Shelley her first time ever on our best jumper. But "Q" was a bit of a dud on this 95 degree day. He didn't want to waste one bit of unnecessary energy and was about as exciting at our oldest and slowest ponies!

The most exciting ride of the night came from Emily. She has a good seat and is a nice rider. We've spent the first two days jumping quite low fences while everyone gets used to the new horses and to riding at Longacres for the summer. Emily was on Shabang, and they were clicking together very well. So at the end of my part of the lesson I put one fence up a little higher - - - and then higher still. Emily looked great and she and Shabang went over a pretty decent sized jump!

We are getting up early again tomorrow to beat the heat on one more very hot day. By the end of the week temperatures are expected to drop to more comfortable riding levels.

June 26:

We're Open!

Everyone has arrived safely for the first session. Most have ridden several horses already. I think Emily has the record with five different horses in her first day. Even our two beginners have "jumped" over cavaletti poles on the ground. We'll post many more details and some pictures tomorrow.

- Tom & meghan

June 25 Update:

Longacres Opens Tomorrow!!!

Great Show Today!

Even though official opening day is not until tomorrwo morning, it feels like Longacres is fully in operation. We took our pre-camp mother/daughter week students to the Hasty Hills Summer Series horse show today, and what a great day our riders had. I will post pictures later tonight. First picture is of 10 year old Laura with Brownie and her three ribbons. Until this past Monday, Laura had never jumped in any official way. She displayed a very good sense of natural balance and timing in lessons this week, so we let her show in X-rails jumping classes today where she got a 3rd and a 4th out of seven entries! GREAT job, Laura. She also won a blue in a walk-trot class (small class).

Next picture is of Shelley on Peppermint Patti, one of our all time greatest jumpers. Shelley rode Pattie very well, taking her time in the first two classes since Patti has not jumped since last year at Longacres. Shelley then "turned it on" for the jumper stake class in her division and easily won the class over eight other good jumpers.

The final picture is of Emma on Shabang. Emma has a natural touch with this horse and won two 2nd's in the highest jumping division against very tough competition. As of this writing we are waiting for the final tabulation, but we think Emma and Shabang are Reserve Champions in their division.

Lillian and Emma are hitting it off very well as our riding instructor team for 2005, and we really like the new students we've had a chance to meet or speak with on the phone. Even though we have a slightly smaller group than usual this summer, we've got many wonderful new horses and with the good group of people spending the next month riding, showing, and living together, 2005 is shaping up as a very good season indeed!

June 21 Update:

Sorry about no update the past few days. We've been REALLY busy putting the finishing touches on cleaning up around the camp from the flood and teaching lessons and working with the new horses at the barn. Debbie and daughter, Shelley, and Sharon and daughter, Laura, are here for mother/daughter week. They're all doing a great job with the horses and helping open the barn. Laura is only 10 and had never really jumped before coming to Longacres. She has now!! Laura did lines of verticles today for her second day of jumping. She told me, "I want to go higher!" A gutsy 10 year old!

Emma is here as counselor and doing a great job getting the barn ready for head instructor, Lillian, who is coming just before the regular camp opens this Sunday.

Meghan is running and running, and RUNNING all around getting everything organized the way she always does. She keeps adding NEW things to make the farm look inviting for those of you coming to Longacres for the first time this weekend. Good job, Meghan - but then you always do a good job!

- tsk

June 18 Update:

Hard to believe, but the 2005 season begins tomorrow! Well, partly - Emma arrives a few hours ahead of our first paying customers for mother-daughter week. Debbie N and daughter Shelley will be here late tomorrow afternoon when they all plan to go into town to Pizza Hut for dinner, perhaps with Uncle Billy. Meghan and I will be out of town until late Sunday night, but back in time to have things all ready for our second mother-daughter pair, Sharon Waters and Laura.

Longacres always looks its very best on opening day, on the day of a horse show, and at the beginning of October when everything is cleaned up and put away from the summer and the fall foliage is out. Although next Sunday is officially opening day, Meghan and her crew have done a fantastic job and things look wonderful this weekend for our arriving mom-daughter week people. I am on my way down to the barn after I post this to finish off just a little bit of mowing and weed wacking so things look just SO for Monday's riding!

Check the alumni webpage for a great letter from Lauren talking about how weird it is for her to be out of school and not rushing off to Longacres for the first time in six years or so! Also read about the alumni reunion here at Longacres on August 10th for the Jumper Derby Party.

June 16 Update:

The most important story today is one not-quite-final tribute to Tovah Abrams. Be sure to read it. It begins below.

Other news of the day is that Meghan and Tovah are out right now picking up the latest new horse! A very willing 15.2 mare that has done some jumping, spent time as a brood mare, and is VERY cute, I am told! Forward moving and quick to learn.

The flood damage from last week is being taken care of. Most of the farm is looking very good and the barn itself is drying out well. About all that most of you will see of the flood when you get here during the next week is some damage to the road on the main trail from the barn to the dining hall. You will have to take about a 200 foot detour around the old swimming pond because the bridge there is damaged and not safe. During mother daughter week we are fixing the old creek crossing closer to the dining hall that was washed away. Mother daughter students will have to go across stepping stones in the creek, but it should be repaired by the time regular camp opens on the 26th.

Now for -

A Tribute to Tovah Abrams

Tovah has been a valued member of the Longacres family since she first arrived as a 14 year old student almost five years ago. That first year she was chosen as "Camper of the Year". She has done nothing but prove herself more and more competant and reliable each year since then, rising through the ranks of assistant instructor all the way to Director of Riding.

This year Tovah had an opportunity to return to the camp where she grew up and learned to ride and run a much smaller riding program (can you spell peace and relaxation?!?). Tovah actually considered this same job last year, but we talked her into one more year at Longacres! The clincher for Tovah is that she gets to work with her sister and some other old friends at this camp. So early this spring Tovah informed us that she would not be able to return to Longacres this season. Hard news for us since we have relied on Tovah's riding ability, good common sense, and incredible work ethic for the past four years at Longacres.

Tovah could easily have decided to take some well deserved time to herself when college ended in May before going to work at her other camp job for this summer. But, no, she made plans to come to Longacres as a volunteer with Alex Millar to help run a Memorial Day horse show. We gladly accepted her offer to give us two weeks of "Tovah efficiency and hard work" to help with the show and opening the barn. Well, it is now more than a month since Tovah arrived and she is still here working with Meghan to buy new horses, training them to jump, organizing the barn, making lists to help this year's staff, and doing EVERYTHING that Tovah Abrams does so well. She is finally driving on to her home in New York and her new job tomorrow morning. We will miss her greatly, but she has given of herself immensely in an effort to leave the Longacre horse barn all cleaned and organized and ready for her successors on this year's staff to take over. What a remarkable young woman!

This website has seen a number of trbutes to Tovah Abrams over the past four and a half years. This will be one of the last for a while. We are ready to turn a page and work with Lillian Jacobs and Emma Bogdanoff to run a fine riding program for our new and returning students in 2005. But Tovah has become a permanent part of the Longacres family, and don't be surprised if she turns up in Longacres news again, perhaps in business with Meghan buying, training, and selling fine horses after her college education is done. Hey, you never know!

And the best thing that Tovah has done all week? Yesterday she was telling me about one of the new horses she and Meghan have bought this month. Tovah told me, "This is one that we can really use right away in our program." Get that - "WE"! Even as she is on her way to a new summer job at her childhood camp, Tovah feels enough a part of the Longacres family for the long term to speak of Longacres as "we"!!!!! Really nice!

We at Longacres are perhaps most pleased that in a year like 2005 when many of our long time students have grown up and gone on to regular summer jobs elsewhere and we have quite a few new faces coming to ride with us, many former friends of Longacres like Tovah are making such a big effort to keep in touch and help out! Thank you, Tovah - - - and Alex and all the alumni from many years ago who have recently written and offered their best wishes for the future of Longacres. Thank you all!

Staff for 2005:

Those of you returning from last year will feel right at home. Tom will still be telling you to "ride your horse, not go for a ride" in your formal lesson. Meghan will still be organizing "everything"! Julie will still be cooking when we don't go out for the evening. Uncle Billy will still be visiting and cheering us on at shows (and competing against us with his own TWO leased horsies!!!!!). Riding Director Lillian Jacobs accepts her new role at Longacres after three years as a student. Her right hand will be veteran Longacres student, Emma Bogdonoff. (Erika had planned to also be an assistant to Lillian, but just yesterday informed us she is unable to come).

We also have new help on the farm with Patti now living in one of the cottages year round and doing everything from fixing broken stuff to acting as substitute chef. You're gonna like Patti!

Longacres looks a lot like Longacres this year. But we have more new students than anytime in the past several years and we are VERY much looking forward to getting to know all of YOU!!!!

June 12th Update:

It's still very wet here after a weekend of more heavy rain, but we're getting a handle on the big storm damage. The barn is beginning to dry out and we've made plans for repairing the road to the dining hall this week. All should be well by the time you all get here (some of you in just one week!!).

We're shopping for some new tack for the horses, "finding" jumps, and lots of other progress getting made. "Finding jumps"? Well, yes.

Tovah and Alex did a wonderful job of setting up for the horse show two weeks ago, as you have read. They had a little trouble setting up the courses in both rings with enough rails, which they thought was a little odd, since Longacres owns so many great jumps and we had no trouble setting up two courses last summer.

But they swapped rails and jump parts between the two rings and made it all work with great compliments from all show exhibitors. Well - - there's good news and bad news about that.

The good news is that Tovah and Alex are so resourceful to be able to set two courses very well with only just enough jump rails. The bad news is this: A few days ago Tovah was doing more cleaning around the barn and checked one of the fully enclosed stalls that had not yet been prepared for the summer. Turns out she had never bothered to look carefully in this stall since it has a full door and is hard to see into unless you actually open up the door. There was some junk in the stall - - oooops! The junk turned out to be 17 more jump rails that could have been used in the show! I guess the really good news is that Longacres can set two great jump courses for a horse show without even touching 17 "forgotten" jump poles! Tovah has been very red in the face this week - Alex, we cannot vough for since she is back in Ohio for her summer job - "hi, Alex!"

- tsk

June 10th Update:

"Be Careful What you Wish for - "

We have been wishing fervently for rain after the driest May and early June in over 70 years in western New York. The ground was getting hard for the horses and the grass turning yellow/brown. We needed a soaking rain. We got it. Last night between 9 and 10:30 PM we had more than five inches of rain, perhaps even more right over Longacres. It began as a delightful display of nature's fireworks in the form of a brilliant lightning storm. Then the rain came - torrentially and it didn't stop.

We had the most intense local flooding in 30 years at Longacres with severe damage to our roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. Thousands of dollars in damage to the concrete bridges on the trail between the dining hall and the barn, alone! We're still in shock and pondering the best way to make repairs.

All I can tell you is that somehow we will. Damage to the barn, cabins, and riding facilities was minimal. Unless you really look for it while walking the trails when you get here in a couple of weeks you probably won't even notice any damage.

Those of you who have already been to Longacres know the "cement bridge" across the little creek down where it empties into the big creek not far from the dining hall. That heavy cement structure simply vanished in the flood waters after being there for nearly 60 years. Eventually we'll rebuild it. This summer we'll probably make due with a culvert pipe and gravel fill.

We have a similar problem near the old swimming pond.

The water was 8 inches deep in the barn last night, but just 20 hours later, things are drying nicely in the barn area.

Thanks for listening while I vent. I repeat that most of you won't even notice the damage when you get here in a couple of weeks. And life goes on - Meghan and Tovah looked at another new horse prospect this morning while Tom ran the tractor draggin gravel into the ruts and holes in the roads.

- tsk

June 9th Update:

Alas, two steps forward and one step back. We've written quite a bit about Hazel, our possible "jumper" prospect over the past few days. We've had her here on trial to evaluate her potential. She certainly had the potential to jump well. But she also has some issues with nerves and her way of dealing with frustration is to suddenly back up. We were working with her to see if this could be trained away or otherwise safely managed. Yesterday she did it while being bridled and backed into a stall latch, getting a nasty cut. It is looking like we will not buy Hazel after all. Meghan and Tovah are busy looking through the "horses for sale" ads again!

We have updated the "New Horses" picture file. Click here for the latest "ho-ho" jumping pictures and others!!!!!!!

June 6th:

Go to the "alumni" page again tonight. Another great letter from a Longacres rider from 30 years ago! Joanna was memorable, and you can see from her letter that she remembers VERY well!

Also click here to see some pictures of the new horses. We'll be taking jumping pictures of them tomorrow and see how they look learning over fences.

June 5th Update:

Very exciting, seeing some of the new horses we're buying for this summer actually show up in the pasture! Remember Tovah and Meghan's story below about "Hazel"? (temporary name which we will change) Tovah tried her out this afternoon before Meghan and I got home from a little business trip. When we got home, Tovah was very excited. Not only does this horse like to jump, but Tovah says that for a horse with very little jumping in her history she is GOOD already! She first jumped everything in the little ring and seemed to love it. So Tovah took her on the big outside course just to see if the jumps scared her. Nothing to it! So there was this 3'3" jump on the road line. The mare seemed eager so Tovah said, "Why not give it a try?" Effortless jump! After Tovah calmed down from her excitement telling us about this first ride I asked her, "Do you think this horse really has the potential to be another jumper in the future?"

Tovah answered, "I think you could take her in a jumper class right now, and you might win!" This is a big bold bay mare with the possibility of becoming another Patti or Quantum. VERY exciting horse news! You guys are going to have fun horses to play with and show at Longacres this summer. More to come tomorrow along with some pictures!!

June 4th:

Watch this space during the next couple of days! Tovah and Meghan have been putting hundreds of miles on the car driving all over NY looking at horses to buy. And they are down to cutting the final deals. They will have some very exciting news and pictures over the next couple of days.

The bottom line is that Meghan is a good manager with a good feel for the long range good of Longacres. I (Tom) tend to be more conservative. We are a little down on our enrollment this year since so many of our veteran riders grew up this year and had to get jobs for college. We'll have about half returning Longacres riders and half new girls this summer. That's a good thing for the future. But our budget is a little squeezed. And conservative Tom might have decided that this was not the year to be buying new horses. But Meghan quite rightly said, "This is exactly the year to be investing in exciting new horses, We have more new girls than usual coming to Longacres and they are the future of Longacres. Whatever the cost, we've GOT to have the best and most interesting string of horses this summer so everyone will be sure to want to return again next summer."

Well, I think after you read the news coming tomorrow and Monday you will be satisfied that Meghan and Tovah have added some exciting new blood to the Longacres herd!!!!! Stay tuned!

June 3 Update:

Double news tonight: First, I want to acknowledge a great email message from a long-ago Longacres camper. Go to the alumni page and check it out. Sue has got just about everyone else on the alumni page beat for the number of years since she was a camper here. It is heart warming that people check our website so many years after riding at Longacres and still have strong memories of their time here!

Second: A story about new horses and horse shopping from Tovah and Meghan. That's right, Tovah. Tovah is NOT coming to Longacres this year even though she has been a very big part of Longacres for four straight years. She has family obligations and an opportunity to go back to her own childhood this summer. But you'd never know that she's not coming to Longacres for the season. She is here living in her old cabin Pegasus and running horse shows, training horses, shopping for new horses, and helping Meghan get the camp open for business. THANK you Tovah! (Don't worry, Erika - we are saving new horses for you to train when you get here.)

Here's Meghan and Tovah's story for tonight:

Hi girls! Hope you all are doing well and are excited about this summer! Our new horse, Horatio (hoho for short!) is coming along very well... he is jumping small courses and gaining weight and muscle (he was very skinny when he got here)! He looks a lot better now and I think you are all going to like him. He has a very comfortable canter and is fun to jump. He is not lazy, but not super forward either... just the right amount. We are working on leads and simple changes, and he likes to occasionally surprise me and throw in a flying change! He told me that he's excited for this summer and can't wait for his first show! In other horse news, we now own a ten year old paint gelding named Joker (he was born on April Fools' Day!)... pending his arrival this Sunday! We're excited about him too. He is very sweet to work around and pretty calm, although he is still definitely fun to ride. He is a very interesting looking paint... you'll just have to wait to see him! He is too exotic for words! He is only one of lots and lots and lots of horsies we have looked at and visited and tried out. We are hoping to buy another young, verrrrrrrry cute paint mare if the deal works out. Her name is Mocha and she is a 5 year old black and white paint (her portrait is PRICELESS!!!!) who is pretty green, but very calm and willing... she has a great attitude and we like her a lot. Another possibility is a very pretty bay thoroughbred mare who has some spunk to her and likes to jump. Her name is Hazel and she's 12 years old, and she told us that she might like to be a jumper. Even though Hazel is 12, she has had very little riding done with her. She was a race horse for a couple of seasons and then a brood mare for five years, and recently has had time off. We have looked at countless others, but none of them made us say "wow!" like these ones do. So we'll let you know which ones end up arriving at longacres!

- Tovah and Meghan

May 31 Update:

We feel almost like we have betrayed our regular summer camp students by running a horse show at Longacres without you! But we did and it went off beautifully. Thanks to Alex Millar and Tovah who did all the work getting the show ready and helping us run it. Tovah was one of the judges, and she did a great job! The big benefit of running the show is that it got all the jumps painted and repaired early so that when the mother-daughter week people begin to arrive, the Longacres show field will already be in great shape. We also made enough money on the show to buy another new horse, and Meghan and Tovah drove around all day today trying to spend that money wisely!!!! More on that soon! Write and tell us about your riding everyone. You will all be here at Longacres soon.

Hello to Kim Wetterau Zern, former Longacres barn manager from the late '80's and now a mom herself. Kim phoned me today and we had a great talk about old times. Kim used to live in Buffalo, moved to Rochester, then Chicago, and now is moving to - - - - -EAST AURORA! Welcome HOME to Longacres turf, Kim!

May 26th:

Great Job, Alex (and Tovah)!

Some of you know that Alex Millar is here at Longacres for two weeks doing her senior project. The project? Organizing and managing a horse show! Fun! But LOTS of work. Tovah came up to help Alex, and they have been killing themselves with work in between riding their favorite Longacres horses and training Horatio. (Don't worry, Erika, there will be lots of training left when you get here.)

The course for the show was set today and it looks great. If any of you are able to visit Longacres on Saturday, you are very welcome. The show rings look wonderful!

May 24th:

Beth made Tom cry!

In a good way! Once upon a time Longacres rider, Beth Maker, learned from a friend recently that her beloved Longacres Riding Camp from her youth is still alive and well. Trying to track us down she first got in touch with my mother in Connecticut. My mom very much enjoyed hearing the good memories Beth had of her time here, and gave Beth our phone number. Beth called this morning and talked with Meghan. Meghan told her how much I enjoy getting email from former students, so Beth wrote me a lovely message. (Check the alumni webpage for her note.)

Not only did I enjoy Beth's message, but after 26 years I still remembered her very well so I phoned her back in Connecticut. We had a great call remembering good old times at Longacres and some of the other girls (and boy) that Beth knew at Longacres. It is quite heart warming to hear from girls who had such good experiences at Longacres long ago and who remember us still. After I hung up the phone, I noticed a tear of happiness rolling down my cheek!

May 23:

Hi Everyone!

We had a busy weekend managing a couple of sports events but we are back at Longacres working hard getting ready for our first horse show of the 2005 season. Tovah and Alex did a great job cleaning up all the jumps. We'll try to post a picture tomorrow. The jumps are all lined up together outside the barn where we cleaned and painted them and they like kind of like a forrest of white stands, brick panels, and colored rails!

But the best news is about how nicely our new thoroughbred, Horatio, is coming in his conditioning and training. I'm not sure how much I have told you before. Horatio is a 6 year old gelding that was raced briefly - he was SLOW! He won a total of $92.50 in his short racing career. But that slow and steady temperament makes him a great hunter prospect. He has spent the past two years as a backyard pet with little training or riding of any kind. And he is very thin. He spent the winter on a farm with a poor pasture and lost quite a bit of weight. But when Meghan went to look at him for the first time, she saw through his matted winter coat and hips and ribs showing. She saw the kind, affectionate Horatio personality. And she guessed that he would be very trainable once we cleaned him up and fed him well.

Tovah has been riding Horatio for training only a few days and she totally agrees that he has great promise! He has never been jumped. Tovah did not know that and trotted him up to a cross rail the other day. He stopped once to look at it. Then he went right over it and the third try he actually picked up his knees and jumped it nicely. Today, about his third day of training, he is jumping little verticals. And on nice pasture grass and lots of feed he is gaining weight before our very eyes. He may still be a bit thin when you all get here, but he won't be skinny anymore. Pictures of Horatio coming soon!

- Tom

May 19:

Hello everyone!

It seems like riding camp is really in session today. Tom taught Tovah and Alex a video lesson at 11:00 this morning, just like it was the middle of the summer. Tovah, Alex, and Meghan then drove to a neighboring town to try out several new horses and they all LIKED one of them! (More soon!)

This evening we went to Pasquale's restaurant for pizza and ran into Jeremy Green and one of the horse show judges from last summer. Then we came home and watched video's of today's lesson with Tovah, Alex, Meghan, Uncle Billy, and me. Slow motion of Quantum Leaps and all the usual stuff we do during the summer!

Many of the jumps are washed off and some have fresh paint. The show ring fence is getting painted today and tomorrow. Horatio had his second jumping lesson and his first lesson crossing the little creek near the barn today. You are all going to like this horse's attitude.

PS - thanks to Shelley for her list of things Tom should be grateful for not happening when he hurt his little finger last week!

We're all going out of town for the weekend, but check back Monday night. We'll try to have lots more news and some new pictures posted.

May 18:

Tovah and Alex and Meghan got a lot done at the farm today! (me too!) The show ring fence got scraped and partially painted. All the jumps were taken out of the barn, cleaned, and set up for painting, A few jumps were moved to the show field for training. Wow! I'm tired even writing about it. AND, Alex and Tovah still found time to ride. (Wouldn't any red blooded Longacres rider?)

Best of all, Tovah rode Horatio for the second time, and he seemes to be a VERY fast learner about jumping. He is a green thoroughbred off the track and has never had any jumping. He is still thin from the winter, but has a great attitude and not a mean bone in his body. You guys are all going to like working with him!

May 17:

2PM: While Meghan, Tovah, and Alex are down at th barn getting things organized I am up at the office catching up on odds and ends. Right now I am making a copy of a video tape from last summer that Lauren ordered. I have watched Brianna having several good rides on Justin and just two seconds ago I had the PRIVILEGE of watching "Da Child" do one of the most graceful fall-offs on record. Remember the time at Hasty Hills, Shelley?? I can't wait to see Bri and Shelley riding at Longacres again this summer along with many returning riders from last year and the new girls we're looking forward to meeting for the first time.

- Tom

We're so grateful to long-time Longacres students and staff members, Tovah Abrams and Alex Millar, who are here as volunteers getting the barn open and setting up for our pre-season horse show! They want you all to know that when they turned Brownie, Quantum, Horatio, and Bobert out in pasture together this morning for the first time, the horses put on quite a show, galloping, jumping, twisting and playing together!!

Below: Alex, Meghan, and Tovah addressing horse show info packets

May 16:

And the contest is a tie! Bri and Emma each sent me "Pity Party" messages. They took different approaches, and both are great. Printed below. As you will see, Longacres riders do not hesitate to "lay it on" their fearless leader!

Check the May 12th story to refresh yourself on what they are talking about.

Here is Emma's:

To our suffering leader-
I must admit that upon reading the tragic account of your misfortune, my
eyes filled with tears. Overcome by my emotion, I had to spend several
hours composing myself before I could continue. Just the thought of our
own brave, fearless, stoic leader suffering from such an appalling and
dreadful wound - so upsetting, there aren't even words. Rest assured that
when I come to camp this summer, that tree branch will feel my wrath. Do
be sure to take your recovery seriously - though on the surface it may
seem small, an injury such as this is not to be overlooked!
My most sincere condolences,
Emma

Here is Brianna's:

Dear my fearless leader-

Now that I have time I will write a pity party note.

Poor Tommy wammy got a booboo. Do you want me to kiss it (ugh the thought of kissing an open gash is replusive) Be sure to put some ice and nice gooey antibacterial lotion and a powerrangers band aid on you finger, we wouldn't want any gangreen, now would we? Rest your fingey now so it doesn't hurt oh so much.

Activities to refrain from-

  1. typing
  2. piano playing
  3. fishing (putting the hook on the line) wouldn't want to reprod finger
  4. mail opening
  5. writing
  6. opening and closing snaps
  7. button pressing
  8. shampooing
  9. poking
  10. mouse clicking
  11. page turning
  12. finger puppeting
  13. number dialing
  14. fiddling
  15. prodding.

Anyway must go now--- feel better

Brianna

May 12th:

New Contest! Win Tom's Pity-Party Award!

OK, here's the deal. Your sometimes fearless leader, Tom Kranz, got a boo-boo on his finger working at the barn yesterday. Meghan is away on a business trip for two days so there is no one around to feel sorry for me.

I was picking up branches that had been cut up with a chain saw and throwing them on the pickup truck. Most were small pine branches so I was casually reaching down and grabbing them. Mixed in was this one sneaky thorn apple tree branch. Now, I have been pricked before picking up small pricker bush branches where I have gone, "Ouch! Darn it." And gone right back to work.

In this incident we are talking serious, half inch long hard thorns sticking out of the branch camoflaged in color so they were nearly invisible. We are talking Tom reaching down carelessly and REALLY grabbing hold of this evil branch. With his bare hand. We are talking Tom's eyes suddenly opening as wide as saucers as he looked down at the thorn apple branch oddly stuck to his left hand.

I dropped the branch with an "A-a-a-a-a-RRRRGH!" We are talking a hole in a finger dripping bright red blood with an exquisite kind of pain that brought tears to a grown man's eyes! Well, enough of the gory details. The puncture wound - (some might say scarcely visible pin prick - even if I feel like it is a great gash) is closed up today, but it still hurts as I type this message.

SO - the CONTEST: First time we go into town or the mall this summer I will give the winner of the contest the "Tom's Pity Party Award" and $20 spending money. All you have to do is email me the best, most sympathetic, or clever "Poor Tom" message. Contest closes midnight Sunday and I will announce the winner in this space on Monday. If it is especially origional, we will post the winning message here. Use your imagination!!!!!!!!!!!

- Tom (suffering alone) Kranz

May 11th:

More Good News!

For a while it looked as though only a few of last year's Longacres girls would be returning for 2005. We have some great new students coming and we're looking forward to getting to know them and introducing them to our nice Longacres horses. But it was going to be a very new group.

But as camp time gets closer more and more of last year's students and staff are having second thoughts and returning for at least part of the summer. The latest announcement is that Emma is coming from July 10 to 24th as an assistant instructor. We are very interested in having Emma as one of our senior instructors in 2006 and this is going to give her some valuable on the job experience a year ahead of time! And just tonight, Jess Nash's dad called and said that we should save a space for Jess for the first two weeks, from June 26 to July 10th. Along with Erika and Lillian working as instructors and Meghan and Julie running the dining room and the rest of the program, and Shelley and Brianna here for the full session, we are going to have lots of veteran Longacres riders here for the summer!

We still will especially dedicate ourselves to giving a great first year at Longacres to all our first time students. But that will be a lot easier and a lot more fun with so many fine girls from last year returning.

And New Horses!! Meghan has been out making long drives to look at new horses every other day or so. She is bringing Horatio in next Monday and hopes to have two other new horses to try out next week. One is a small bay mare that is very quiet and the other is a fascinating looking paint gelding that is a great mover. We hope they work out and join the Longacres herd!!

- More to come soon!

May 8th:

Meghan spent part of her Sunday off driving around taking a second look at some of the new horses she is planning on bringing in to Longacres. Also, Barbie Glica who found Jenna for us (and for Shelley, "Da Child!"), is planning on sending a nice show horse to us to try out and offer for sale this summer.

BULLITEN!! The "Bush Monsters" have fewer dens to hide in. We have totally cut down the huge bush next to the show ring. It was kind of pretty there, but always managed to spook a few horses and make it a little harder to put in a smooth performance in the show ring. The bush is GONE! (And so is the pricker bush next to the pasture. I have been just going NUTS with my chain saw!) By the way, Shelley, Meghan tells me you have your very own chain saw? And that you did WHAT on Christmas day? Anyway, you know how much fun I'm having.

May 6th:

Well, the 2005 season has begun! There are horsies in the pasture and we've spent many hours the past few days fixing fences, trimming pricker bushes, getting hay and feed, and turning on the water for the barn. AND mowing grass!! The Longacres show fields are Emerald Green at this time of year.

Pony Frankie and good old Bobert are the early birds in the pasture and they are LOVING the fresh green grass! We put hay out for them last night - they didn't even look at it. Then we put some grain out - they couldn't be bothered to stop eating grass long enough to check out the grain. They did finally eat the grain sometime overnight.

By this afternoon, Frankie was lying down in the sun with his head and neck upright. At first he was grazing on grass this way, but slowly the warm sun got to him and he lowered his head so that his jaw was resting on the ground while he just moved his lips to nibble on a few luscious pieces of grass! He was very comical. Frankie looks wonderful. He has gained some weight since last summer. We are still planning to trade him for the new thoroughbred, Horatio, but it is now tempting to keep him the way he is looking.

Bobert looks very good and will look fat as a pig by the time any of you see him with all this spring grass!

May 3rd:

More Great News!

Erika Attoma has been considering our offer to return this summer as a riding instructor for months. Finally, with much begging from Meghan and because her good friend Lillian is also returning, Erika has said "Yes!"

Between Meghan, Lillian, and Erika they have 17 years of experience at Longacres. This year's students will be well led and supported. And I chose those words carefully. At Longacres our staff don't so much supervise or take charge of our students. We like to think our staff offer good friendship, good leadership, and constructive support. Erika, Lillian, and Meghan are perfect for that.

For you new students, below is a picture of Erika on one of our most recently acquired horses, "Ginger".

May 2nd:

I'll be heading over to Reboy's Farm Supply first thing in the morning to pick up fence repair supplies. The horse pasture is in pretty good shape but needs a few posts replaced and some of the electric fence wire patched. I have to do that tomorrow since Frankie is returning to the barn Wednesday or Thursday. That's what's keeping us busy this week at Longacres!

April 30th:

Meghan and I keep trading "hats" in our work preparing for the summer. First one of us will work on fun things having to do with the horses, while the other does grundy things like picking up fallen tree branches and cleaning up the old junk pile near the dining hall. Then we switch. The past few days Meghan has been the one playing with horses. In addition to arranging to get "Horatio", she has looked at two more possible new horses, and bought a saddle and three new bridles at a used tack sale.

This morning I got the tractor out and finished the first mowing job on the show fields at the barn. I'll have to do this once a week for the next month while the grass is growing super fast. Some years I get to the mowing too late and the grass has clumps of hay spread around until July. But I got to it just in time this year and the show field and ring look like a golf green! Good thing, since Longacres will be hosting a series horse show on Memorial Day weekend long before most of you get here. We'll check in again with you on Monday!

April 26 very late:

I made the mistake of writing "horse vacation" yesterday. Here's Brianna's response:

Hi Tom and Meghan-

On the website on yesterday's post you refered to longacres as a riding "vacation." A vacation is when you sit a spa with cucumbers over your eyeballs and get massages and tan and drink pina coladas. Longacres is where you are permenantly covered in an inch of sweat and grime (including your teeth because you smile so much that they are being exposed to the grime also), and ride your butt off (literaly). So not to confuse to new kidlings please refrain from using vacation and longacres in the same sentence.

I am SOOO excited about new horsey, as we all know Meghan has wondeyful taste in horses ie- STAR (who is literally a STAR) so tell me ALL about him. Thank you -Brianna

April 26, late:

Meghan just got back at 9PM; looks like we own a "Horatio", 6 year old dark bay thoroughbred gelding just about 15.2 hands. Very pleasant horse to handle and very friendly and patient on cross ties. Loves mints!!!!!

He was NOT a fast race horse! Apparently his total earnings as a race horse on the track were $92.50! In two years! He is definitely green, but likes people and likes to please. He should learn fast about this hunter - jumper business! And YOU will be the ones to teach him this summer.

  • Tom & Meghan
  • PS: Horatio jumps after all! I just watched the video Meghan took of him trotting around his pasture with a quite inexperienced rider. Suddenly there was a little branch on the ground in the mud in front of him and just as sweet as can be he jumped it like he was in the X-rails show ring. Maybe he's a natural!

April 26 Update:

Bulliten: Meghan is running back and forth between three barns this evening trying to put together a horse "trade". Here's the deal - she has been watching the papers lately for new horses and went to look at a young bay Thoroughbred gelding this afternoon. He hasn't had much training since he was on the race track a few seasons ago. He's mostly been a trail horse, but Meghan really liked his personality. While talking with the owner about the price, Meghan mentioned that she had a pony we might consider selling (Frankie). The owner of the Thoroughbred said, "Let's just trade - I'd love to have a pony as a companion for my own pony."

So Meghan is on her way back to the next town right now (7PM) to watch the new gelding being ridden and then to take that horse's owner over to look at Frankie. We love our Frankie pony, but he gets very feisty in the winter and it is hard to find him a suitable home during the non camp months. Besides, Longacres is short on bigger horses, especially after losing Lucky this winter.

Stay tuned - - - maybe we'll have a new horse by later this evening!

April 25 Update:

GREAT NEWS!

We're VERY VERY pleased to announce that Lillian Jacobs will be returning as our riding counselor and barn manager after three years of experience as a Longacres student! Lillian will be attending Clark University in Massachusetts this fall (majoring in International Affairs - Meghan! ) Here's a picture of Lillian with Meghan taken last summer - two of the most important people who will be working together to give ALL OF YOU a great 2005 horse vacation!

More good news! Brianna has been planning to return for her fifth season at Longacres for just the first two weeks, but she finds that she can now come for the full four week session. Brianna and Shelley will both be experienced Longacres students returning for the full four week session. We have quite a few new students joining us for the first time in 2005, and it will be much easier for us knowing that we have two girls who know all the Longacres horses as Bri and Shelley do!

And while speaking of staff, I can now also announce that Julie Bennett will be returning as chef for the third year in a row. Julie has been wonderful with our girls for the past two seasons and we're glad she can return.

2005 - the "Clean Up Year":

As our regulars know, we have been taking down some of the very old cabins no longer in use over the past few years. And some of the old lumber has lingered in junk piles! Meghan has put her foot down, and we are working hard to clean up many of these junky piles of spare lumber by the middle of June. Hope we finish before you get here. I will miss knowing that if I need an odd length 2 by 4 I can just head down to the junk pile, but Meghan is right - they have been an eyesore!

April 19 Update:

We're Baaaack!

Tom and Meghan returned to the farm in East Aurora this week after our annual late winter travels and work in Florida. There is much to tell you and I will be updating this column every day for the coming week with news.

We returned to the farm to find many, many trees down across the trails and in the woods because of a late season snow storm two weeks ago. I have already spent an afternoon out with the chain saw just so we could get in the barn driveway!

Already we are calling winter horse homes and arranging for the return dates for horses coming back and talking to families who want to send new horses to Longacres for training this summer.

Great Video to Get Better!

Check this picture:

Longacres has always had excellent video equipment to film our own horse events and other sports promotions we do in the off season. We just got an HD TV camcorder so we can show you your riding rounds in amazing detail - maybe better than you really want to see, HA HA!

Much more news to come in the next few days. Check in tomorrow to read about the special alumni session during the first ten days of August. We are making a big change in Longacres schedule this year and running regular riding camp sessions only in July and dedicating August to special reunion visits from alumni.

Finally, sad news. One of our top five horses, "Lucky", had a pasture accident where he was spending the winter in New Jersey, broke a leg and had to be put down. It is a great loss to Longacres. Nora was Lucky's greatest fan and most loving rider. She had Lucky in New Jersey with her for the winter and we are glad that he spent his last half year of life with a rider who loved him. We feel for Nora who cared so much for this fine horse.

- Tom & Meghan

February 24 Update:

Last minute instruction from Meghan; if you send in an enrollment check during the next four weeks while we are away from the office, please also call and leave a message on the answering machine or send us an email. We won't have a chance to open the mail until we get home next month, but we will be regularly checking the answer machine and email.

- Meghan

February 23 Update:

NOTE: Meghan and I will be working in Florida for the next month on promoting our popular boating book about the St Johns River. We will check our phone answering machine every couple of days and our email as often as possible. We will quickly get in touch with anyone who has questions about signing up for Longacres this year!

Hello to all our old friends AND new 2005 students. I want to share with you a nice message we got from Jess Nash today:

"How's merlin?? have you seen him? i miss him sooo much too!! awwwwh merlin. I see that you guys are filling up the sessions! thats awsome! I'm glad new people are signing up. The remind me, of myself my first year at camp...checking the site everyday(which i still do!!!) counting down the days till you get away from yo your parents for once and be on your own. And just being at camp meeting new people and showing at the fair. Camp was an amazing experience for me and i will never forget it.But I'm sure i will be back at camp counseling the younger kids. Hehe"

We are certainly going to miss some of our former students from the past few years like Jess who have other plans for 2005, but we're so glad that many of you are keeping in touch with Longacres and planning on coming back to visit or to be guest teachers for our new students!!!!! It adds great continuity to the 65 years of horse history that is Longacres!

February 13 Update:

We're spending part of this afternoon watching video of last summer as we get caught up making a video Lauren ordered and finding the tapes Nora wants. By coincidence, as I put the tape in, it was cued to Shelley jumping Jenna at Hasty Hills last summer. Going FAST! As she usually does! Shelley just sent me an email yesterday, where she typed about as fast as she rides.

Shelley says things are going well at home with Jenna. When the tape I'm watching was taken, Jenna was a horse here at Longacres for the summer for training. Shelley was one of our riders who got along the best with this great mare, and at the end of the summer, Shelley and her family bought Jenna and took her home to Maryland. Shelley and Jenna will both be returning to Longacres during the first session as the foundation of our "jumping team" for the first half of the summer!

If you wonder what we do all winter, we have been busy trying to organize the horse show schedule for this summer. Lots of politics between different stable owners and trainers! Click here to see the tentative schedule!

Daily Rate for Old Timers!

Some of last year's assistant instructors will be visiting again this year for official short stays to act as "guest instructors". We'll welcome them as guests of Longacres. Other former students not able to return to Longacres for full sessions are also welcome to return for two to four day weekend visits and actually show with us at one of the shows. You can come and pay a pro-rated daily rate for these short visits. This program is only open to former Longacres students who already know the horses and how we do things.

February 10 Update:

Welcome to Penelope S., who just signed up for the final three weeks of the summer season. Penelope's family has their own horses in central New York so she has lots of experience around them. She's coming to Longacres to experience other horses and improve her riding and jumping skills. Great to have you on this year's team, Penelope!

February 7th Update:

Hi guys! Sorry that we've been out of communication on the website for two weeks. It's been a busy time in the office at Longacres. Early in the year things were slow here - only a few students signed up early at the end of last year and in early January. But we did a lot of work updating the website and web pages and there is now quite a bit of new interest in Longacres just the past two weeks.

Longacres welcomes Kaylin L. from New Rochelle, NY. She's coming in at the beginning of the season for a couple of weeks. Kaylin, you'll be here when Brianna and Michelle come - I am sure that all of you will communicate before the season. I just got off the phone from talking with Penelope's mom (Suzanne). Penelope is 15 and is coming for most of the second session, including all of the exciting big shows in August. Penelope, you'll be here at the same time as Emily P. who is already signed up for that time. Penelope also has a friend who may come for part of that time.

We may have a bit of an international flavor to Longacres this summer. We've had inquiries and communications from Philippe and Laura, two french riders who live in Martinique in the Carribean. Also from "Horsey Gurl #1" and her friend in Canada! I hope these newcomers decide on a session at Longacres and help make us "LA International" for 2005.

We're also talking with Olivia B. from South Carolina, who is Shelley's age and interested in that session. And still hoping to have a definite enrollment from Danielle & friend in California! (Are you still interested, Haley from Missouri??)

January 24 Update:

Color me "uneasy" about our involvement in Iraq - I think a lot about the sacrifices so many of our young people are making over there and about their safety. But it never occurred to me until today that former Longacres campers could be a part of all that. I got the following email this morning:

Dear Tom,
My name is Tracy Adamovich, and beginning about 14 or so years ago I attended your summer camp for three summers.
I hate to admit that as I grew older I rode horses less and less. Not because I lost my love for it, but because there isn't much horseback riding on Long Island!
I have such fond memories of your camp. My favorite horse was Miranda, and I will never forget her. I thought she was the most beautiful thing. My favorite memories are of bareback riding through the creek, and of the days we would ride into town for ice cream! I recall buying lemonade from some kids on the way.
I am now an officer in the military, and am deployed in Iraq. It's been a very long year, but I am redeploying soon and cannot wait to get back to the states. I think that when I do get back I will try to go riding again. I miss it very much!
I hope all is well with you. I just found your website and I wanted to write and say hi!
Sincerely,
CPT Tracy Adamovich
US Army

I remember "Captain Adamovich" very well from her days on Miranda at Longacres. I hope all of you join me in wishing her a speedy and safe return to the US and a great first ride when she gets back.

More Pictures!

Meghan is always urging me to put more pictures up on the website and I am working on that today. Check out our updated opening page if you have a minute. Does it load fast enough for you? We are stuck back in the dark ages of dial-up internet out here in the country, so I always have worked to make our pages load very fast on your computer with not so many big pictures. But Meghan assures me that most of you now have high speed connections, so that it doesn't matter like it once did.

We'll be putting up a new "rotating picture page" very soon also. AND updating the "meet the horses" page.

- Tom K.

January 22:

The answer: Ta Da! Star - Star - Star, as Kim from Texas so joyously wrote! We are hearing from people from all over the country the past few days.

Mystery Girl: We had a phone call asking for a brochure tonight from New Rochelle, NY. Our answering machine garbled the name, so if YOU are the mystery caller, please call again or email with your name so we can send you the information! Sorry for our confusion!

Also we are corresponding with Danielle Pederson from California. Danielle is interested in coming with one or two of her friends for a short session in July. She has her own horse in California. It's kind of amazing how many people get involved in Longacres from all the way across the country. I know I'll leave some out, but we've had Lillian Jacobs, Kaelyn, Atchie and Elissa, great instructor Marcie, and Niki a couple of years ago. Bonus points if you can think of someone I've left out from the past five years!

Big snow here in East Aurora tonight, but I think some of you on the East coast are getting it even worse. But it is enough for me to have to get our tractors running to clear the 900 foot driveway to the main house!

January 16 quiz:

Meghan has several very favorite horses - We had to drive to Rochester and back today on business and Meghan had two chances to "wave" to one of her favorite horses in a winter home pasture. Which of Meghan's favorites was this????

January 11 Update:

Hi guys! Thanks to Nora Whelan for sending a typically "interesting" account of some of her activities with favorite steed, Lucky. I will post her story and some of her pictures soon!

Also welcome to Cara M. who has already been listed as a probable 2005 student. We got your forms yesterday, Cara, and welcome you to the Longacres family. Keep checking the "meet the horses" page. We will be updating it soon with pictures of some of the new horses and other recent information and new pictures.

TELL A FRIEND about Longacres today! We are going to have to work hard to fill all the spots at Longacres this summer. With so many of our long time students all going off to college this year and getting "real jobs" to pay for school, we have more vacancies than usual to fill this year. That's why we're so pleased to have new students like Cara and Emily signing up and joining returning Longacres veterans like Brianna and Shelley as 2005 Longacres Riders.

Searching the internet! With more spots to fill at Longacres this year, we are paying a lot of attention to small changes in our website that will let us show up more easily when a new family searches for "riding camp" or "equestrian riding camp". Write and tell us what words you used when you originally searched for a horse camp. We have already moved Longacres up several spots to the very top of the lists in some search engines. MSN network REALLY likes Longacres! Yahoo shows as right at the top, also, but temporarily we are listed by the old name for our opening page, which was simply called "welcome". That should soon change on the search results to a more recognizable "Longacres Riding Camp". This search engine stuff is rather interesting, but frustrating. When I make a change it takes from a week or two to more than a month for the changes to be noticed by the search engines. Google is perhaps the most used search service on the web, and Longacres does not yet show up anyplace in their top pages. We think we know why, but it will take some time for our lsiting to move up. We welcome comments from any experts out there!

- Tom & Meghan

January 8 Update:

If I told you that I just got a letter from Karina Busch, it might not immediately ring a bell. But if I told you that I just got a letter from the former Longacres student who is shown jumping "Tip-off" 5'3" in the old promotional video, and also riding "Tip-off" at Erie County Fair, probably everyone who has been to Longacres in the past fifteen years will know who I mean. Letters like this are what make this job worthwhile:

"Dear Tom,

I was surfing on the Chronicle of the Horse bulletin board and someone was asking about riding camps. I told them about you but said I didn't know if Longacres was still offering camps. Imagine my delight to see you guys still going strong, and also my surprise and glee to see so many of my old friends still there doing a great job teaching new generations of students. Pep Pat, Missy, Brownie, Dipper, Joey!! No horse will ever replace Tip Off. Ahhh, the memories. She was by far the best horse I ever rode, and I have ridden a lot of VERY fancy expensive horses since, and none could touch her. How I miss her.

Ahhh, the good old days. I am living in Lexington, KY now and am doing my residency in Emergencyy Medicine. I did eventing for a long time and have now come to my senses and switched back to jumpers. I now have an almost 6yo Zangersheide Holsteiner gelding who is still green but can JUMP THE MOON!! You would LOVE him! I'll try and attach a pic. I am not as good as I was back in the glory days, but when my residency is finished hopefully I will have more time and money and can ride several a day again rather than one horse just a couple days a week.

Anyway, I am thrilled to see you are still doing well and are even still at your old Mr. Mudd antics! I still hope to come for a visit one day, and I still hope to make the Team someday so you can say "we knew her when". :) You taught me soooo much and I never had as much opportunity or as much fun as I did there.

All my best to you!
Love,
Karina Busch
PS: Pix of Lantus Z, aka Linus, aka Biggie below... :) My BABY!"

January 6 Update:

Welcome back Brianna!

Brianna returns to Longacres for the first session as 2005 Longacres student #5. Great to have you back for the umpteenth year, Brianna! Brianna's e-mail link is on the penpals page if some of you want to exchange messages with her or ask her questions. She knows the ropes! (except that the creek had a name!)

December 29 Update:

Welcome to Emily P. from Maryland who is 2005 student #3! Emily will be at Longacres during the final weeks of the season when we are showing at Erie County Fair and holding the exciting 2005 Bold Jumper Derby at Longacres. This is Emily's first time at Longacres and she is 13. She will in the next few days be joined by Kara M., also from Maryland and also age 13 who will likely become Longacres 2005 student #4. Kara knows Shelley "Da Child" Kearney and her mom, Debbie, who ride at Columbia Horse Center. (Debbie N. is also known as Longacres 2005 student #2, since she is coming with Shelley to Mother-Daughter week in June for her second year.)

We're pleased by this flurry of Longacres activity during the holidays. Looks like a nice group of younger teens joining the Longacres family for 2005 and beyond. That's a good thing, since we have such a large group of older teens who have been coming to Longacres together for years. Many of them will be going off to college this year, and will have too many other commitments to return as Longacres students this year.

Alex Millar is one of those college bound "old folks" who will not be able to return in 2005 as a regular student, but Alex has come up with a clever scheme to still have a little "Longacres Fix". She is making plans to come up and spend some time with us in May and help open up the barn, get the horses in shape, and perhaps help us run a special Memorial Day weekend horse show. Thanks so much for that offer, Alex. We think it sounds like a great idea! That's all for now.

- Tom & Meghan

Dec. 22 Update:

Hello all; For those of you following the major over-haul of our website, you may have noticed that we're making many of the pages on the site have a more uniform look, including a thumbnail picture on top that you can click for a bigger version. Tovah and Quantum have been EVERYWHERE! Partly because that picture of Quantum is oe of my very favorites, and we have a copy posted in our RV bedroom. And it was easiest to modify all the webpages using the same picture at first. But I'm starting to replace some of the Tovah-Quantum pics with other horse and rider combinations. Click around the site and see who you can find. (Yes, there will be a quiz!)

December 21 Update:

If you have logged in during the past two days, you may have noticed changes to the website being made right while you were online with us. Some are long overdue.

We've always made frequent additions, especially to this "Latest news" page. But we have been bad about going back over the many existing pages on this quite large website and updating information that was out of date. We're devoting the next few weeks to revamping the entire Longacres website to make it more attractive and informative. We hope you will stop back often, and we welcome your suggestions if you see one of our old pages that should be changed. (Only yesterday did we finally update a page listing our top riders to acknowledge Tovah as #1 rider - two years or more after she earned that honor!)

Be sure to click your "refresh" button frequently, in case one of our old pages is in your cache.

You will also begin to see some new titles on familiar pages - some of them repeated more often than may seem necessary. This is an effort to "game" Google searches into finding our website more often. It used to be that Longacres Riding Camp showed up very high in many of the various search engines people used on the web. But we have never scored very high in "Google" and in today's world, if you "don't exist in Google", you might as well not exist. While I work on this problem, I would love to hear from some of you about what words you used the first time you searched for a riding camp and found Longacres.

In fact, a few searches for "riding camp" today showed Longacres appearing in the first batch of results with multiple listings on Yahoo, Microsoft Network, Lycos, and others. But nothing on Google! We have some idea of what Google is looking for and would be glad to hear from any experts out there.

- Tom

December 20 Update:

Bulliten - This afternoon we put in a lot of time changing and updating the website. Many articles were moved and changed to be more up to date and reflect changes made to our programs over the past two years. Most articles now start or can be found on the opening page you get when you go to www.longacres.com. We would be grateful if some of you would take time to browse the changed website and then write and tell me about things I may have messed up or links that don't work, or things that still need to be changed.

H A P P Y H O L I D A Y S ! ! !

"Da Child" is 2005 Student #1 - Welcome back, Shelley!!

Shelley Kearney is the first student to formally enroll for the 2005 season at Longacres. Shelley will be returning for the first half of the summer, and her Mom, Debbie, will be joining her here for mother-daughter pre-season week. If you are a regular follower of this webpage, you have read some of Shelley's "entertaining" reports. Shelley will be bringing her talented jumper, "Jenna" to Longacres with her. Most of you have heard that Shelley was very successful showing Jenna in jumper classes at Longacres last summer when the mare was here for training. Shelley's parents bought the horse for Shelley not long after the season ended this past fall.

Anyone for the New Year's Reunion?

So far, we have no one with reservations for the annual reunion we hold here at the farm New Year's Eve day and New Year's Eve. Some of the usual suspects have other commitments. But we will be here and would be glad to have even one or two of you as guests for the day and night. Give us a call if you want to come and see Longacres in the snow.

Last Minute Gift Idea:

We have just finished a DVD of the Longacres Bold Jumper Derby from last summer. It is available now for $20 plus $2.50 shipping.

Also Available:

CD with nearly all digital photo's taken in 2004 in full resolution files suitable for 8 by 10 prints - $20 plus shipping

DVD - Longacres 2004 Yearbook Video - $20 plus shipping

Magazine Story about Peppermint Patti?!?
Why we didn't think about this before now, I don't know. But someone we told about Peppermint Patti's amazing story over the past few years (and her life story, for that matter!!!) suggested that we write up her story along with a bunch a great Patti photo's and submit it to one of the national horse magazines. They were sure that it would be published, and I think they are correct.

The theme of the story will be how this incredible mare who is ridden by lots of different riders in a lesson program goes to the "A" show at Erie County Fair every year and WINS. Not only has she won all kinds of jumper classes, but this year (August 2004), Patti WON jumper classes at an "A" show with THREE different junior riders. We think that this might be the only time a horse has done that in the history of recognized horse shows and that would be a big part of the article, along with the miracle of patti's recovery from arthritus.

We welcome all of you who have ridden or even just known Patti to send in your quotes about this horse and about your favorite Patti memories. We'll try to include many of your names and quotes in the article.

NOW we need suggestions from you Longacres students on which magazine you would most like to see publish this story? We do not read horse magazines often ourselvces, so we need your help in picking the most appropriate magazine. Send your suggestions right away - we will plan to finish the article in late December and hope it might be published by March or April.
-Tom & Meghan

December 14 Update:
This is our last message from Florida, where we are on our annual fall trip. We're flying home to the farm at Longacres tomorrow, the 16th, and will be available to answer phone calls and e-mails without the delays you've experienced while we were traveling. We hope all Longacres people are having a good holiday season!

Watch this space soon for many bits of news about the 2005 Longacres horse show season and plans to let more new students learn about opportunities at Longacres. Of course we hope many of you from last year will return for another year, but a lot of our long time students are getting OLD and may have to go to WORK this season, so there is sure to be space for more new girls this year.
- Tom & Meghan

BULLITEN: TOVAH SHARED QUANTUM!!!!!!!

Continuing Education for Horse Camp Owners!

I've learned a lot in a lifetime of teaching riding and running horse shows. But there's always more to learn and new tricks in course design to absorb. I try to visit important horse shows from time to time to keep up. I haven't been to many in the past couple of years until this fall. We've been making up for the lost time recently, including visits to Toronto Canada's "Royal Winter Fair" and to Wellington in Florida on our fall schedule.

We were in Toronto in mid November and were able to spend an evening at the "Royal". Besides being a top notch horse show, there is all kinds of pageantry (bagpipe bands and stuff - - - gee, what other show has that stuff?##?!!?) at Toronto. It was gratifying to find that Ian Miller, one of the all time great Olympic riders for Canada, is still actively showing. He was one of the last to ride in the speed class the night we were there. All the young hot shot riders had already gone, and there were some great rides. Then Ian came out - - he is more or less my age - - - and what a round he put down to win the class! Let's hear it for the old guys!!!!

This week we visited the Wellington showgrounds in Florida for the National Horse Show and got to watch the Lexus Grand prix. I experienced both the familiarity with the old guard horse show people that I remember from my youth and my own show career and some of the young riding stars of today. I'm pretty sure that the show announcer was Peter Doubleday who was already announcing the important shows back when I was riding many years ago. The course was designed by Conrad Homfeld, a friend of Joe Fargis. Joe has visited Longacres for clinics years ago, and Tovah rode in one of his Clinics at High Time a year ago. But there was no surprise 60 year old winner of the event.

The top two riders in the jump-off came from the new ranks of great young jumper riders. One was McClean Ward. One of the high points of my own show career was riding in a class against McClean's dad, Barney Ward. I tied for 2nd with Barney in this big class, and it has always been one of my favorite showing memories. It was a little wierd watching his son as one of the stars at Wellington this week. The other young rider in the jump-off was Georgina Bloomburg, daughter of the mayor of New York! I liked her horse best of all the horses at the show. But she went first. She was clean, forcing McClean to go very fast - which he did to win the class. We took some video, so we can show those of you who are able to visit Longacres for the annual New Year's reunion.

NEW YEAR'S REUNION:
We do plan to hold the traditional Longacres reunion the day before new Years and New Year's Eve. Let us know if you want to come.

OFFICE CLOSED UNTIL DEC. 16th:
We are traveling until Dec 16th, but we will be in aqction full force updating the website and taking early reservations for 2005 from then until New Year's. PLEASE NOTE that there is a discount on tuition for those of you who sign up before January 2nd.

Some of you have noticed that our website was down for a week recently. In the process of getting the site back up and running while we are traveling down south, some odd things have happened. Somehow I killed all the links to other pages from this newsletter page the other day. I think I've discovered what I did wrong and we'll see if the links come back when I upload this corrected page.
For the time being to simplify this project, I will also delete some of our older news. I will post it again in an archive page when I get home to the farm in December.

MEGHAN's JUNIORS!
Well, that's what she's calling her 2005 project today. She's asking for suggestions on a better name for the program which is, well - - - all about Meghan's Junior's!
Meghan enjoys helping and getting to know all her summer friends at Longacres, but she has always gotten the most joy out of making the youngest students at Longacres feel at home when they first join our program. Meghan will soon be posting a special page on the website explaining some special new plans to make Longacres more "junior friendly". Not that we aren't already very junior (10 to 12 year old) friendly. What ten or twelve year olf horse lover wouldn't be excited about spending a camp session where they could ride five hours a day, have 25 horses to get to know and love, and spend part of your summer with a small group of similarly horse crazy young girls???? No problem.

The problem we do have is making the parents of younger girls feel at ease sending their children off to a small, quite informal family horse farm way out in western New York to live with strangers for the summer. Put quite simply, MEGHAN'S JUNIORS program for 2005 will be a more thorough explanation of the special attention Longacres offers the younger horse lover than we've offered to families considering Longacres previously. Younger riders will take all the same part in Longacres riding and showing program and all our special activities as they always have. But Meghan wants to go out of her way to make parents of younger girls feel very comfortable about the way we will look after those young riders. Check back in mid December for lots more on this, and tell your 10 to 12 year old horse loving friends and their parents about Longacres!!

November 11th:

Leaving this afternoon for a month down south - we will check e-mails every few days while the office is closed. I thought you might all enjoy a very entertaining e-mail I just got from Shelly "da Child" Kearney. I am posting it with her permission - Very much like listening to Shelly in person. (Nora, I think she is giving you a run for your money as most imaginative Longacres correspondent!):

I don't know whether the dinner picture quiz is already solved, but my answer is the people standing are Emma, Nora, Lauren, and Meghan ( yes it was dinner ( look at salad bar in back, Lauren at the stove, and two empty spots (for you and Meghan), Mexican rice, tortilla wraps( in tin foil), and no food is touched, so you and Meghan haven't sat down yet(notice down-turned cups):-) ) ) . I'd say (for extra points) that it was the second official week of camp. (two weeks after mommy- daughter camp) I can tell by the back of the picture frame. I'm pretty sure it was the pictures of me and my girl Jenna(love) and Tovah and Quantum, and the picture of Mandy on Wizard and Erica on Stoney. I'll laugh if I'm right.

Down here in Maryland where the grass is still green, Jenna is getting fat(ter) even though she is ridden about four times a week ( by my mom and sister). I can't ride :-( I dissaligned my pelvic bone while riding her 2 days after I got her. actually, I shouldn't have been riding since I pulled a leg muscle 3 days before I went up to NY to get her, but I'm ignoring that fact. so, essentially, even though I've had her over a month, I've basically only ridden her about 3-4 times, when I've been mainly well( I healed then pulled the muscle again 3 days after I was better, and can't ride(still) ) and I have to go to a physical therapist twice a week for the next 3 or 4 weeks( I can't remember which) and have been going to a physical therapist twice a week for the last 2 weeks.

But I'm still happy because it is my birthday, and the physical therapist said I could ride at the walk, bareback or with a saddle (but I can't because I took Jenna on a Sunday and she decided to jump a itsy- bitsy 12" or 18" log, wouldn't go over water without me getting off and leading her over (the horse we were following kicked), but then the 2nd time we had to go over water she decided it would be best to do so(YET!!). Thhhhhheeeeeennnnnnnn, she tried to run away with me into the sunset for ever and ever, and right before we left our barn, she broke my noseband, so I was doing my best to control her through the preceding scenarios with out a crop(I didn't have one(BAD MICHELLE!! BAD!!!!!!) ), flash or noseband, in a loose-ring bit after I had been doing bareback dressage ( I tacked her up before the trail( she was licking her stall gate(we were outside her stall) and got her noseband stuck in it. that's when she broke it)( which she hates.(dressage that is.) )

Shelly

November 10th:

MANY of you have responded to the latest quiz about what horse was purchased most recently, including "da Child", Brianna, Emma, Mandy, Erika, and Jess. You were ALL wrong!!!!! Frankie and Ginger are PONIES, not horses!!!!!!!! Trick question! After further review, Erika was the first to come up with the right answer - Justin and Shabang purchased at the same time from Hasty Hills. Meghan vows to buy some more bigger horses this coming summer, even though we do love large ponies.

2005 news: We will post prices and schedule as soon as we return in December. Unfortunately, there will be a slight price increase this year. We have not raised prices much for some time, and there will be about a 5% increase for 2005. HOWEVER, we will bill anyone who signs up by January 1st at last year's rates, so if you are sure of your plans early, you can save some money.

November 7th:

Erika also answered the latest quiz correctly - it's Atchie and Joey at Long Snap TWO YEARS ago! Good memories!

NEW QUIZ: What was the last horse (most recent) purchased by Longacres (not loan horses)?

November 6th, morning:

You guys are too good! Jess already sent in the correct answer to last night's quiz, and I thought it was going to be a hard one. She even knew the rider! I will see who else knows before posting the correct answer to this, and the previous quiz.

- Tom

November 5 Update:

Wow! You guys are really paying attention to the quiz's! Erika, Alex, Emma, Tovah, and Jess and Mandy all answered the latest picture quiz.

Meghan and I just got back from a two day trip to Toronto, where we attended the Royal Winter Fair horse show. This is one of the great indoor shows in North America. They have all kinds of showmanship and pageantry along with the great jumping classes. I used to go every year, but have not been in eight years. We had a great time and wished some of you from Longacres could have gone with us.

New quiz: WHERE is this picture taken?

November 1st:

hehe , i know who the horsies are too, Treek, Joey and Merlin!

Email me back! talk to you soon

From ,Jess Nash

That's right, Jess. Jess also named the riders who are Elissa, Mandy, and Jess. Tovah also wrote in with the correct names. Glad some of you are checking the website and paying attention!!!!!

New Quiz: Name the people who are standing, from left to right! For bonus points, which week of the 2004 season was the picture taken?

October 30 Update:

Here's the message Erika sent yesterday with some good gossip!:

Hey Tom and Meghan!! How have you guys been? I just got my pictures back from the summer and they made me sad and they made me miss everyone a lot!! Shebang and Lady are doing really good. They're getting nice and fat and furry! The other day I rode Shebang out on a little trail ride...to the field next to my arena! He liked it a lot. He especially enjoyed eating the fresh grass that was over there when I was grazing him when we were done working!! I have some pictures of him that I took last week so I'll try and scan them and send them to you. He's very dirty in them because even though I brush him everyday he always rolls!

Haha that picture for the quiz of the day thing is so cute! Hmm...maybe I can name them . . . (CENSORED BY THE EDITOR TO KEEP THE SECRET!!!!) Haha pond jumping is so much fun. At my barn in the back my instructor built a little cross country course and there's a pond out there too and I told her that I wanted to jump into the pond. She said I might be able to try it when the weather gets warmer!!

I went and visited Lake Erie and saw Tovah and Quantum earlier in October. Quantum looked very happy, with his first place ribbon on his stall! I was there the weekend of the show but I didn't get there in time to see Tovah ride.

Anyways I hope everything is going good! Its good to see the website being updated again! I missed it!! Haha alright well I'll talk to you later!!

-Erika

October 29 - Quiz of the day:

For fame and fortune, be the first to send an e-mail naming the horses and riders in the picture below!

And the winner of the quiz is - - - - - ERIKA ! - and only a half hour after the picture was posted. I won't spoil it for the rest of you by giving the answers. Send in your guesses and we'll see how many get it right! We miss you, also, Erika - it's about time for an Erika fall visit!

October 28 Update:

Wow! It's been a long time since a Longacres update. But we finished most of the outdoor work of closing up the farm for the winter today and our sports management business is finished for the fall. So you can expect some more regular updates over the coming week or two. We'll post the 2005 schedule soon, along with some interesting plans for the 2005 horse show season.

A few interesting bits of news from this week. First we heard from Tovah who has our horse Quantum with her at Lake Erie College for the winter. Tovah and Q went in their first show since Erie County Fair. It was indoors, and Quantum is not very experienced showing inside. He did not like the first class and refused a jump. Tovah got him around the course, and dids better in the next class, but still didn't win. But in the final class of the day (the money class!), Tovah and Quantum got it all together and did win the class! Way to go.

Brianna sent a message and a nice picture of herself riding Clyde on the beach in Connecticut. She was very worried about how he would react to the water, but she says he was great. ( I have always wanted to ride on a beach, Brianna - never got the chance.)

And TODAY - - Meghan and I were working around one of the cottages down in the old part of the camp and a car pulled in. It was Kathleen (Swart) and her friend Marilyn. Kathleen's mom, Noelle, was camp nurse at Longacres in 1952 and 1953, and Kathleen and her sister were full season campers in those two years. We traded old memories and "Do you remember - - - -?" questions. It was a great little visit!

That's it for this update, but keep checking in. We'll have lots more information posted soon!

Sept. 3 Update:

Good News: We have finished editing a CD disc with 257 high resolution pictures from the summer. These are the best of over 700 we took all summer. We think there are some of everyone from this season. These are big .jpg files from 5 megapixel images, and suitable for printing 8 by 10's or even poster size prints. You can order the CD for the same price as our Yearbook DVD, $22.50 including shipping to cover the duplicating costs.

August 28 Update:

Hi all,

Thought you might enjoy reading a nice e-mail we got from Tovah last night about her early days at Lake Erie College with Quantum:

Hiya Tom and Meghan, I've been so busy with class on campus and at the barn and studying and reading and taking care of quantum and riding him! And tons of other things. But it's friday so I have some free time!
My roommate left... she went home to texas (She said it was financial problems, but I think she just didn't like it here), so I have the room to myself, at least for now!
Quantum is doing well. I rode him on the flat tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. I've ridden him on the big field and in the indoor, both of which he seems to like. He is full of energy and feeling good! Today I wanted to jump him a little, but there are no jumps in the indoor yet. They are all outside... so I got in a little bit before it started pouring out! We just jumped some little stuff, crossrails and tiny verticles, and he was plenty excited about those! I'm going to find out about starting some weekly lessons on him with one of the better instructors here. He made friends with a little quarter horse gelding that he got turned out with. :) And he is absolutely fascinated by a mare and foal that are here. When I am grazing him and they walk by, he picks his head up and stands with his ears pricked. He can't take his eyes off them! I'm not sure if he is looking at the tiny foal or if he is captivated by the mare.
So, I have my riding classes where I ride school horses on mondays and wednesdays. On monday we didn't ride because it was our first class. On wednesday we rode on the flat, basically so the instructor could get a feel for everyone's abilities. I rode a jumper mare named Tara. She had a big trot and canter and was a bit pully and hot. I liked her a lot :) I'm in riding skills III, which is supposed to be one of the better classes, but some of these people didn't seem so good... a little scary to watch! I didn't get much feedback from Chuck, my instructor, during the lesson so at the end I asked him if he noticed anything about my riding that I should work on, but he said he was mainly focusing on the people in the group who looked like they might get killed! That's one of the reasons I want to take some private lessons... I think I'd get more out of them. But it was just the first lesson, so we'll see. Oh, also during the lesson Chuck had us come in to the middle several tim
es to talk and I REALLY wanted everyone to line up neatly! Everyone was standing in all different directions and it just looked so disorganized!!! So I stood in front of the instructor and kept correcting my mare when she would move and try to stand sideways (I could tell that she was not asked to stand square too often!). But it was just so frustrating... I really wanted a neat lineup!!!!! But I guess every place can't be longacres.
I miss you guys!
Tovah

August 25th, 4PM:

Meghan and Tom are now all alone at Longacres. Well, almost. Frankie is still at the barn along with Jackie's horses for a few more days.

We said "Goodbye" to Erika and her horses a few minutes ago with hugs and frantic waves goodbye. All we have to do now is nail the shutters on the barn shut and finish closing up the dining hall. We'll have fewer updates for the next week or two, though I wouldn't discount the possibility that I'll sneak in a quick message now and then to reward the very faithful who check in all the time. I know most of you are on late summer family vacations or frantically getting ready for S-C-H-O-O-L!

Bye!!!!!

August 24, later:

It suddenly occurred to Meghan and I that some of you from first session have not heard that we bought two new Longacres ponies during the second half of the summer. Look below at "Ginger" and "Frankie".
