Hotel Sleep-Over! (Back to Menu)

One of the most popular things about Christmas Cheer for the past three years has been the chance for your group to gather at a nearby hotel for a spirit party and sleep-over during Christmas Cheer Weekend every year!

Cheerleaders are welcome to commute to and from home to the competition and there is no requirement to stay at the hotels. But many squads have traditionally enjoyed an "overnight" together at this time of year. We welcome those who choose to stay at one of the hotels nearby, where there are all kinds of entertainment and shopping options. Some will stay Friday night, many more on Saturday night (or both).

Buffalo Marriott is Official Hotel!

NOTE: Details for 2003 sleepover are being finalized now (Sept. 3rd) - following is last year's info: Groups taking part in Christmas Cheer are eligible for a special rate of $72 for double rooms at the 1st class Buffalo Marriott hotel just down the road from Boulevard Mall and about ten minutes drive from Tonawanda High School. The Marriot has many restaurants, lounges, a pool, exercise rooms, and all first class facilities. This special group rate of $72 puts the cost very close to the rates charged by other no frills hotels nearby.

For Hotel Reservations: Call the Marriott at 716-689-6900 and ask for reservations. Tell them you are with the Christmas Cheer group and that you want the special $72 rate for the group.

Buffalo Marriott

1340 Millersport Highway

Amherst, NY 14221

716-689-6900 or jholbok@boykin.com (email for Judy Holbok, group sales manager)

The group rates are good until November 14th, unless the hotel sells out before then - call soon!

Other Hotels:

Please be aware that the event managers make no commission on your hotel arrangements; we have recommended the Marriott as our event headquarters, as a convenience. You are welcome to shop around for lower rates if you want a basic motel.

Special Events: (Back to Menu)

Competition Divisions:

NEW! Trophy for best Grammar School Novice squad

NOTE on Competition Division and Trophies: GRAND CHAMPION very large trophies will be presented in the below divisions

We will gladly split any divisions and get extra 1st place trophies for the best performance by a small squad, non-tryout squad, very young age group squad, or any other requested division if there are two or more such squads. Be sure to let us know of your special request by Dec. 1st.

High School Varsity - All-Star / Open (coed or won a tournament in past 12 months)

NOTE on All-Star division: For many of you, it will be a judgement call whether to enter the top "All-Star" division or the regular Varsity Mounting division. True Co-ed squads (3 or more males) MUST enter this division. If you have recently won a major tournament 1st place, we urge but do not REQUIRE you to bump up to the top division. The All-Star 1st place squad will be awarded the largest trophy in the tournament, the "Niagara Holiday Cup Challenge Trophy".

High School Varsity - Mounts allowed

High School Varsity - No Mounts

DANCE TEAMS - 3 minutes; no voice required, no jumps or stunts required; Cheerleading squads already entered in a cheerleading division may ALSO cross enter this division.

High School Junior Varsity,(or all-star / independent through grade 10) mounts allowed

High School Junior Varsity (or all-star / independent through grade 10) - no mounts

Mini-Squads (4-6); Mini-squads may enter formally representing a school, or as independant groups. In fact, any division may be entered by independant cheerleading clubs or groups, so long as you meet the age and eligibility requirements that would normally apply to a school squad in that division. But the Mini-Squad division is especially good in case only a part of your cheerleading squad is available for this event. You MAY enter a full squad in any division and also have SOME OF the same girls enter again as a Mini-Squad NOTE: Mini Squads do full Cheer/Dance routines, and are not what some events refer to as "Stunt Teams" doing gymnastics only.

Junior Mini Squads (through Grade 8)

High School Mini Squads (grade 9 - 12)

Grammar School/Modified/Little Loop (through grade 8)- Mounts Allowed

Grammar School/Modified/Little Loop (through grade 8)- No Mounts

Little Loop/Modified Juniors (through grade 6), etc (NOTE: with 3 or more entries each, we will add as many Little Loop age group divisions as needed)

Individual Competition - separate awards for grammar school entries (through grade 8), and for high school age cheerleaders. Individual performances 60 to 80 seconds, and including use of voice, at least two different jumps (more are better), and dance. Floor gymnastics beyond the required jumps are permitted.

Partner Competition - separate awards for grammar school entries (through grade 8), and for high school age cheerleaders. Partner performances 60 to 80 seconds, and including use of voice, at least two different jumps (more are better), and dance. Floor gymnastics beyond the required jumps are permitted. Mounts are permitted, but NO tosses or unsupported dismounts.

Bulliten - We have had requests to add a college cheerleading division and an "Open Division" for individual and partner competition that is open to college level cheerleaders or anyone else who wants to compete, with tosses and unsupported dismounts allowed. The "Open" individual competition will be the same rules as the other ind. Divisions, except no upper age limit. The "Open" partner competition will be open to ANY pair of cheerleaders, Co-ed or girl/girl, and will be freestyle (tosses and unsupported dismounts will be allowed. Call if interested.

OTHER RULES:

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE Christmas Cheer CHEERLEADING COMPETITION:

1) The Cheer/Dance routine must contain a music - dance routine in addition to some cheering and a jump, mount, or stunt.

2) Each scored cheer must contain at least one jump, mount, or gymnastic stunt. When the dance routine is used in the Sunday round, the cheer must still meet this requirement. Each cheer must contain some words; dance routines must incorporate some words. (EXCEPT for dance squads competition)

3) It is recommended that cheer lengths be between one minute and 90 seconds long. While there will be no set "penalty per second" assessed; cheers that seem too short or too long may be penalized on the judge's Over-all score rating. The Sunday dance routine WILL be subject to a three minute time limit.

4) Hint on Music: Most squads edit a tape with a medley of music for their final round performance. We have found considerable variety in quality as these tapes are played over our concert quality sound system during the competition! When preparing your tape, pay special attention to the recording "level". Make a test tape and play it and a commercially recorded tape in the same machine. Your tape should have about the same volume as a commercially recorded tape without changing the volume control. Try to record your tape on a good quality recorder to avoid having loud "pops" or level changes between the cuts you are editing. We now URGE you to submit your music on CD.

You will be responsible for having someone from your squad hand the tape or CD to the sound person with the right side up, and cue the operator when to start and stop your tape or CD.

5) All Cheerleaders and 2 coaches or advisors per squad will be admitted to the events at no charge. Parents and other fans and boosters will be charged an admission fee of $5.

6) Each judge will give a "general impression" score from 1 to 10, and will also score several specific judging categories from 1 to 10.

Specific categories will include, spirit, voice projection, voice clarity & diction, variety & imaginative use of voice, motions & timing, stunts & mounts, neatness, jumps, and use of music and transitions from cheer to music in the Sunday round.

7) Although we plan to have a professional sound system and tape player for your use, it is the responsibility of each squad to provide and operate a tape player of their own as a backup. An electric outlet will be provided.

8) The order of performance will be posted prior to the first competition round.
